Car Tax - Haven't Renewed

I've just realised my car tax ran out on 29 February. I've been on nightshift this week and have just woke up and the post office is now shut. For some reason i did not receive a reminder (Govt cutbacks )

I need to use the car for work tonight. So where do i stand with the law?

...or do i use the Mr's car instead?

Do it online if you have the V5 in hand.

Then you're fully covered.

As long as you have valid MOT and Insurance you can do it all online.

Very easy to do online and your almost instantly on the system as having tax then.

What's the most out of date you people have ever been? I can't be the only one who has accidentally driven illegally for months before.

When I renewed my tax last year, I stupidly put the new disc behind the old one in the windscreen holder, so I've been driving for 11.5 months with the wrong disc showing. Didn't notice it until I remembered that it was due for renewal in February.

This year I've removed all the old discs and I only have the new one in there now Not quite what you're asking, but there is a £200 fine for not displaying a valid tax disc.

Oops - then Post Office it is.

Think he can still do it online, and it would show on the system as taxed, but he wont be covered if he got stopped. But then it would be for not displaying, rather than not paying the tax.

Trying to ring the DVLA to see if i can do it online is a nightmare .."We apologise all our lines are busy" phone disconnects , or it's just a automated computer voice. I JUST WANT TO SPEAK TO A HUMAN!!!!!

Because you can't do it online unless you keep the car off the road until the tax disc arrives. You can only keep driving the car until it arrives if you apply BEFORE it expires - ie, midnight last night.
