If it weren't for the fact they seem to be actually calling their latest car this, I would have assumed it was some kind of Audi targetted **** taking exercise...

Let me introduce you to the new...

*drumroll*

... Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Who on earth tabled that idea? And what did they offer round that made everyone say 'Yes!'? :p

Ah the Sportbrake, conjures up images of... well.... hmmm....

At least with Sportback you can at least see it as some sort of light SUV I guess.

What's wrong with it exactly?

Well just that 'Sportbrake' is taking the Audi led concept of being scared of words like hatchback or estate to a whole new daft level.

WTF is 'Sportbrake' even supposed to mean?

Nothing wrong with the car itself, I quite like the actual car :p

Would this not be linked to the idea of a shooting-brake, presumably the phrase itself was thought a bit outdated as the target market was more likely to be into various sports rather than shooting per se and therefore we've got this somewhat silly evolution of the phrase.

Well, at a rough guess it's merely a portmanteau of 'Sport' and 'Shooting Brake'. Sport being self-evident in meaning and Shooting Brake being an olde English term for estate car.

Not seeing why it's that controversial, to be honest.

Its clearly a derivation of shooting brake. Perhaps mixed with sports tourer?

Well that would have been clearer if I had ever heard the term shooting brake :p

I don't get why manufacturers seem so scared of just calling things 'estate' or 'hatchback', it doesn't need a 'cool' sounding sport name.

This car is 4 years late, not sure what Jaguar are playing at waiting until the XF is entering the latter half of its product life cycle to introduce this.

They were playing at making sure their core product, the XF saloon, was a big hit, before ploughing further millions into a new product?

Which precludes the design and release of the Estate version.... how exactly? Its the same car with a conservatory on the back :p

Merc and BMW don't seem to have issues releasing the Estate 6 months after the Saloon...

But how much bigger is their engineering budget? Dont forget Jaguar is still losing money, so its possible there wasnt a huge amount of money for them to develop the estate. LandRover is much more profitable, so perhaps funds were diverted there.
