Because you can't do it online unless you keep the car off the road until the tax disc arrives. You can only keep driving the car until it arrives if you apply BEFORE it expires - ie, midnight last night.

I bought mine last night :D

Me to :)

It should still show as taxed through ANPR systems though. Sure i have already posted this 3 posts back, so less risk if he is going to drive it tonight.

Are you sure about that?

My car:

Date of Liability

01 03 2012

Vehicle Status

Licence Due to Expire

I renewed it last night and it's not showing as retaxed yet...

What's the most out of date you people have ever been? I can't be the only one who has accidentally driven illegally for months before.

Up to 2 weeks you are OK. I've done this before and did receive a reminder once. Its not as if you gain anything because it starts from the 1st of the month anyway.

Most I've gone forgetting the MOT is probably 6 weeks. Just forgot.

Work colleague just bought a car with no tax from a dealer and went to tax it online and the website says the car is still taxed. I guess the dealer or previous owner hasn't had the refund on the old disc yet.

ANPR, yes, but he can still get done for not displaying a valid tax disk.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1994/22/section/33

33 Not exhibiting licence.(1)A person is guilty of an offence if—
(a)he uses, or keeps, on a public road a vehicle in respect of which vehicle excise duty is chargeable, and
(b)there is not fixed to and exhibited on the vehicle in the manner prescribed by regulations made by the Secretary of State a licence for, or in respect of, the vehicle which is for the time being in force.

Yes, ANPR reads your reg not your tax disc, so anpr will read the reg and show its taxed so you wont get stopped but if a police officer sees the disc then your in trouble.

But if he is going to drive its the option with the least amount of risk, rather than just waiting to go post office tomorrow.

Ive always bought mine online on the 1st of the month after it expires, never been a problem just do it online, it comes quickly and the police won't do anything if you can prove you bought it and it hasn't arrived. I got pulled after ANPR trap copper made a phone call and said yeah you bought it online thats fine, if it isn't here in a week get onto them, no problems on your way

V11 states you have 14 days to renew tax after it expires, car has to be kept off road in that time to remain legal. I have gone 3 n a bit weeks over and not got fined, although I wont leave it as long next time! I do think having to display the damn thing is an archaic notion, its all stored electronically. I don't have to stick my insurance certificate to the screen :/

Thankfully traffic wardens do NOT have access to the DVLA database. Nor other people who can report you for not displaying a tax disk.
It's a quick, visual check and saves giving every traffic warden and PCSO access to the database and the means to access it while on the move.
