Opinions on Audi A6

The only real problem with high mileage is the resale after you have grabbed yourself a bargain. My volvo with 170k (5yo next month) on the clock is a dream with 100% full volvo service and brand volvo parts. I guess I will be driving this until it falls to pieces but then for 3.5k i cant complain if i get 3 years driving in a nice car.

This is true. Bare this in mind. My first IS had 117,000 on the clock. At the time it was a bargain. but 18 months later it had nearly 140,000 on and pretty much every dealer I tried said "I don't wanna take it off ya mate, you're better off selling that privately"

So remember that if you thinking of selling this 2 or 3 years later chances are you will be doing so privately to get the most money for it.

Yes i have thought of that, this will be a car kept for at least 4 years, will only be doing 10,000 a year, so will be nearer to 160K. I might wait 6 months and spend an extra couple of thousand and go for a lower mileage car of say around 80k.

So why go for a 2 litre diesel A6? You can afford to have one of the nicer petrol engines instead.

Pointless dagdagdagdaging around like a van driver if you dont do the miles for the fuel economy to make up for spoiling your executive waftiness.

Nondescript blancmange shaped vehicle.

Looks like the current A4 which looks like the current A6 which looks like the current A4 which looks like the current A5 which looks like the current A6.

I just think Audi come in for un-neccesary criticism about the cars they make all looking the same. Of course they do - they are all Audi's and most manufacturers strive for a family look across the range.

Agreed. The OP is asking for opinions on the A6, I've given mine. They look bland and much the same as the A4 and A5. And as you say, most manufacturers strive for a family look across the range, this is fairly obvious. Otherwise there would be little corporate identity in design. BMW are no different really. The E53 is most certainly not unique in looks, it appears the same visually in certain respects to the rest of the BMW range of it's era.

the A4 looks like the A6 just as much as the 3 series BMW looks like the 5 series, or the C class merc looks like the E class merc! They all have similarities, but you can certainly tell them apart from each other!

If you buy a6 2.0 tdi make sure you buy one 07 onwards as this is when Audi changed from chain to gear driven engine. The chain driven engine under BLB engine model had the problems on higher mileage cars. Some 06 plates also had the modification to gear driven but not all. It would mean checking the car documents to see whether the work had been done to rectify the problem or checking whether the 06 model had the later gear driven engine.

Nice in theory, but the severe lack of choice might be the limiting factor for someone that needs a car quickly. On Autotrader there are 12 petrol A6s between £10k and £20k. 12!!!

There are 622 diesels.

Remind me to make a similar post when a thread pops up about new BMWs. ^^

At your peril.

Even if you can afford to wait, good luck finding the petrol you're (not) after. There might be two suitable cars in the entire country :p.

I suppose, in this case, there won't be a difference in the price of a petrol A6 vs a diesel A6 going off the sheer number of diesels available to petrol engines, and that's half the battle when considering whether a diesel will be worth it. In this case then, a diesel would make sense because the extra mpg from the diesel will probably cancel out the extra expense over petrol within the year. I get between 48mpg and 50mpg out of mine and i would hazard a guess that the petrol 2.0T will get about 35-38mpg. Then there is selling it on, in a big saloon like this, it'll probably be easier to sell on when you want to shift it, because frankly, everyone wants diesel atm, and even though the TFSi engines are quite efficient, people don't realise this and think diesel = more mpgz and won't entertain a petrol car.

However, saying that, if i was doing as few miles as you are, i'd be looking for a petrol engine coupled up to the S-tronic gearbox, the 2.0T is a peach of an engine in the A3, but it's a wee bit slower in the A4 and A6, but by no means a slouch, and being turbo driven, you can get good gains from a remap. Paradigm has the 2.0T petrol engine in his A6 so he'd be able to confirm mpg figures in it.

I've just contradicted myself there haven't i :p
