gtx 480 or 570

Need a new card to replace my dead 480

do i order the cheap gtx 480 or pay more for a good 570

had bad experience with a 480 that overheated my system

got watercooling and a good coolermaster case so just want a card that lasts longer than 17 months

i got a bum 480

save a 100 and go for the 480 again or the 570 thats prob more reliable

I expect things have been re-worked since, but I recall seeing some of the following floating around the internet, but do adjust if I'm wrong..


480 :
overclock further
higher power consumption
handle AA slightly better
slightly more reliable (initially when some models of the 570 were released)
run hot
quite loud (at load)
slightly more powerful overall
more memory


570 :
lower power consumption
run cooler
run quieter (at load)
(imo) aesthetically superior to the 480 reference models
higher clocks

Remember, the 570 is a replacement for the 470, not the 480. It just happens to be a damn good replacement for what was already an excellent gpu in most respects.

I remember that when the Gigabyte SOC gtx480 deal was at the centre of attention, there was a higher failure rate than in comparison with the stock gtx480's, but the reality is that it was still was quite low, so the chances are that you should be fine. I took the plunge and have had no issues thus far. *Grips desk!*

I would get the GTX480 it's much better value for money. All the above is true but some things aren't a given such as overclocking as there are no guarantees and I suspect if your looking to buy one of the pre order EVGA models the silicon used on this chips isn't the greatest otherwise EVGA wouldn't have held on to them for so long. Also the differences in power consumption, heat and memory are marginally all these top end cards are power hogs and the difference is ram is splitting hairs. If your water cooling then noise isn't a problem for you.

Probably quite a few due to them being cooked in tiny clogged overcrowded Dell type oem/cheap cases with rubbish airflow causing the clogged vacuum bag like scenario.

480 vote from me.

With the money saved, add it to your loop and make it go like a 580 while keeping the temps in order.

I suspect if your looking to buy one of the pre order EVGA models the silicon used on this chips isn't the greatest otherwise EVGA wouldn't have held on to them for so long.

I would imagine it's more a case of couldn't sell them due to the 580's swift appearance at the time, coupled with the 'heat issue' that surrounds the 47/80's.

Whether it's as bad or not as perceived, the 'heat issue' is what is always talked about regarding 47/80's it won't go away and it will always be remebered as a hugely powerful gpu of it's generation but tarnished by it's heat and power draw.

At this price the gtx480 is a no brainer. Its the best value for money card you can get. It has a few flaws but at this price i would live with them no problem.

I think they would at the very least replace it with a GTX570, if not, may be a GTX560Ti 448 core, if they not longer have GTX480.

EVGA = 3 year warranty. The daft sods are selling all their 480s so guess what you would get in replacement in 16 months......

the bad experience you state in the op isnt because of nvidia or a 480 the fact is any card that has no cooling on it will die

maybe next time monitor your setup better

it came already fitted on the package which invalidates my warranty

tbh my water pump failed before my gpu card which sent my cores to 100 and i smelt the dreaded burning smell

so perhaps that ultimately killed my card..the damn pump failure that i didnt spot till it was too late

might get another for 185 or leaning towards the superclocked gtx 570 or the hd7950

only want to play bf3 again at ultra and gw2 when it comes out so no point going mad on a 580 or 7970
