Can I have a fire in my garden?

Oh, this is annoying. Not that I would, but what happens if I refused you entry to the property.

You can't refuse us entry. Fire and rescue services actually have stronger powers of entry than the police do.

However, it shouldn't need to come to that. If you are going to be burning anything at all in your back garden that may well result in a reasonably large volume of smoke then I'd suggest giving your local fire station or service HQ a quick call ( don't dial 999!! ) and just inform them that you intend to carried out controlled burning at your address. They will probably ask you to give an estimate of times that the fire will be burning and maybe request that once you have finished that you give them a call back to let them know.

Otherwise as Eddie says, you may well find 2 x fire appliances at your door. What can sometimes happen is an individual with good intentions may well see the smoke from a few streets away and call us. If the individual on the phone states they don't know what is on fire but there's lots of smoke, our control will generally mobilise two appliances ( sometimes one, depends on the service area PDA policy ) to investigate. If the householder is present and states its controlled burning then we generally wont extinguish it, unless it is near to adjacent property or overhead power cables or if it consists of vast quantities of acrid black smoke billowing everywhere. But a quick phone call will prevent the arrival of two fire crews in the first place so for the sake of a few minutes on the phone, it is worth doing.

If the Fire Brigade don't attend your Bonfire then it's Not a Proper Bonfire. :D

My last one got the engines out but they were happy with my prep as I had a Connected hose & some sand buckets. The Fire brigade left but about ten minutes later some White collar Dude turned up to tell me to put it out. :p

Wouldn't care if it was me and you were doing it sensibly (which it sounds like you are). A heads up to close windows/take washing in etc would be fine with me but I can see others might not be the same.

My neighbour moaned when I nailed a bit of steak to her fence & set it alight. She obviously hates BBQ's

Just take a stroll down your road and give your neighbours a knock to let them know, so they have a chance to close windows or take washing in.

Old guy down my road used to have them on a Saturday, in the summer, about 3pm, nightmare. He's dead now...

If you refuse us entry you are breaking the law. If we justifiably think that there is a fire on a property we can force entry to deal with said fire. If the homeowner refuses entry then the Police are called to deal with the owner while we put out the fire. If it is a serious risk of fire spread, don't even think of getting in the way while we deal with it.

u can burn things in your garden when ever u want, all the rules on when u should and shouldnt are just "guidelines" but as said above it would just be respectful to have it in the evening, make sure ppl dont have there washing out on the line and thing like that

Controlled camp fires are serious business!

You can but if it's a persistent nuisance you can get a fine.

Only burn dry garden waste.
No plastics or chemicals, even to start the fire.
Not in windy conditions.
Not often (three/four times a year)

I only do it at the bottom of my garden, well away from other peoples doors, windows, washing etc. And I always have a hose near by just in case.

Empty oil drum. By the time ive had a few jars nothing is safe from its jaws.
But unlike my neibour i dont set fire to 4 foot high dry grass, then try to put it out with a hose pipe. People who think they can put a fire out with a hose are kidding themselves.
