**NVIDIA GTX 480 IS BACK - TRULY INCREDIBLE PRE-ORDER DEAL!**

I guess if you want an Nvidia card it's a nice deal for the performance you get but wouldn't a brand new HD 6950 2GB give comparable performance, for a similar price but has more memory and runs cooler and quieter?

Also unlocks ;)

They dont really unlock anymore dude.

And an overclocked 480 will smash a 6950. A stock 480 will be better than a 6950.

A 6950 is £20 more

Yes to all that apart from performance, the stock 480 gives performance equal to 6970

Yeah good points, it is def on a par with the HD 6970 there, HD 7850/70 2GB is coming in a few days, followed soon by Kepler. These 480's can be found for around £100 used..

If we were talking about BFBC2 and BF3 with 4xAA applied, the 6970 will be slower by a big margin. Of course, it would be up to individuals to decide of that would be a deciding factor. But at the end of the day, the GTX480 plus a 3rd party cooler is still cheaper than a 6970 by far.

Yeah I'd agree, although the 480 wins in terms of power I'd probably go 6950 for these reasons.

Now if Gibbo could get GB 480 SOC again at this price then there really would be a stampede :D

Gibbo will have to answer that one, unfortunately I am not in work for a week. :)

I am sure he will get back to you in this thread, if not feel free to make a post in the Customer Service section and someone will get back to you tomorrow morning/Monday morning.

Thats ok I will await Gibbo's response :)

So for BF3 (which is my main game and likely will be for a while), a 480 will offer me a really decent increase in performance from a 5870?

*edit*

I suppose I need to point out I have a brand new Gelid Icy Vision GPU cooler I was going to fit to my 5870 that will also fit a 480.

Around 60% of the price of a 7970 for 77% of the performance, amazing value 480 here folks :)
Ninja maths edit ;) kind of

This has always been a point of contention for me, as from a technical progression point of view the GTX480 is the same generation as the 6970 (the GTX580 isn't really any further advanced just refined).

For anyone whose willing to put a 3rd party cooler on it, has good airflow and isn't restricted by the 1.5GB VRAM a GTX480 at this price is a great deal.

Its not too bad in general in games <60% or so its not really audiable above other case noise... however in demanding games, benchmarks or anything like furmarks is can get rather LOUD.

Most mainstream games tho aslong as you don't let it get clogged up with dust it shouldn't get hot enough to ramp the fan up that loud.

How noisy is the stock cooler at stock voltage/clocks? I never tried my 480 with a stock cooler.

At full pelt it's loud. It depends on the game really. I had a 470 which had the tiniest stupidest fan I've ever seen. 1" blower  bloody morons.

But the 480's fan is slightly larger so I would imagine it's a fair chunk quieter.

Put it this way. At 100% my 7970 makes just as much noise as it too has a Delta blower in. What's quite nice about the 470 and 480 is that their overclocks don't generally create a ton more heat than the stock card. Well, I never touched the voltage so that may be why.

At idle? my 470 was practically inaudible thanks to Adpative Performance (down clocking).

At load? well yeah it was loud. I never used to have a headset so I got a VF3000 for it. But tbh with a headset on it wouldn't have bothered me so much.
