Doctor Who

I only caught this yesterday and was disappointed at how utterly terrible it was, but then I shouldn't be all that surprised since Moffat wrote it. I don't know why but his episodes in Series 5 and 6 have been the worst of them, yet before he looked so good in comparison to Davies.
I reckon he's a pretty good episode writer but struggles to lead a writing team when he's in charge. It could be said that the people who write the other episodes just aren't as good as Moffat was when Russell T Davies was in charge.

What I find weird is that the Sherlock series is very good; but then all Moffat is doing is adapting existing books for modern TV audiences. He seems to fall down when writing new stuff for Doctor Who.

I miss Tenant T_T

Me too and RTD :(

Isn't that what Torchwood was supposed to be, and look what a pile of steaming turd that is.

Such a good point. The first season was fantastic but it got worse and the last BBC America abomination had absolutely nothing to do with the who world at all.

The fact that Doctor Who is at it's core a mature children's show is what gives it the ability to range from the complicated to the immature. It's an excellent formula, if not a little frustrating at times, which gives it so many possibilities that many other shows simply cannot pull off.

I think there's a difference between writing a few good episodes and coming in and being the showrunner. In the end he wouldn't be allowed to do an entire series like his normal episodes because they aren't "family" enough and his BBC bosses would have a fit. I think what he is allowed to do is heavily controlled by those above him.

Bloody hell Shami! You've made an excellent point there mate. Moffat's individual episodes before were utterly amazing. I really love his excellent ability to create the perfect environment with music. You'll notice that with all his work, his musical additions are excellent in capturing the mood. I bet you he's pushing and pulling with BBC management to make a dark vs family friendly show.

I think they listened to old who fans and have attempted long story arcs. In all honesty I dislike the long story arcs, but that's just me. Same reason why I can't stand comics but love graphic novels.

Having Dr Who tell what is essentially a corny Christmas fairytale is EXACTLY what a Christmas special should be. It should be 'feel good', it should stretch the limits of magical believability (yes, even for the Doctor)

Yes yes yes yes!!! Completely agree with you mate. Not sure why but I'm becoming a teary mess watching this show. How good was the tour of the house!

The mother from Outnumbered was excellent (fits the show perfectly) but the only cringe worthy part was her strange behaviour when the life forces entered her mind... a little more enthusiasm would have been better than "oh yes, this is really great".

I'm so happy to hear Pond won't return for the eighth season, her bossy 'know it all' attitude really grates on me. I feel like she only gets by on appearance alone. We haven't been able to keep our most favourite assistants for this long, let alone this moody mare. Please get rid. <boot>

When RTD was show runner he set the tone and over all feel of Doctor Who and obviously now that’s moffats in charge he setting it to what he likes, it just a pity he seem to do better work with RTD mood.

Also I think this is the 1st properly bad episode he’s done I liked and loved most of his stuff up till now, I also think the actors are letting him down a bit they just don’t have the range of talents that moffat requires, he’s not working Tenant any more.

Moffat was part of the crew who chose Matt Smith. OK Tennant resigned as Doctor Who, perhaps in anticipation of a change in lead writer, but there's nothing to say that Moffat wouldn't have changed who played the Doctor.

You are correct and I really like Smith in the role but with the size of the doctor who franchise there would have been a lot of input into who got the role and sometimes in these cases its the person people have the least amount of problems with.

I think moffat would have been happy to have Tennant for 1 more year or 2

True. :)

I think that too. ;)

Did not like the xmas special. But the "young" girl in the ep forgotten her characters name is Holly Earl, who went to my high school and dated my brother for a while... so i found the whole episode rather strange, Watching someone you know in one of your fav tv shows is kinda distracting.

David tennent dr who weekend on watch. Watching these really hammer home how poor the Xmas special was and some of the other smith plots.

Watched my 1st classic episode last night with tom baker called the face of evil, I enjoyed it, a lot better than I expected :D

Yes I agree the current main theme is awful :(

Edit: I think the Martha series is the weakest of the new who, it was a not a bad series I like it a lot, I guess I don’t really like the master as a bad guy.
