What would people recommend? I currently have a 560ti Twin Frozr II, it's good but lags when I turn everything up to ultra. I was considering a 7970 but I feel it may be overkill? Will a 7950 or a cheap GTX 570 do the job?

Thanks

Wait for Kepler. Will be out soon.

Although BF3 is GPU dependant, have you tried overclocking your 920 to ~4ghz?

My 7970, when at stock clocks gets between 55 and 110fps
At conservative overclocking settings I get between 65 and 110fps

1980x1080 with everything maxed out

The best you can hope for with an overclocked 7950 is between my stock and overclocked settings.

I would go for the 7970 and max BF3 out completely, or get the 7950 and not be far behind.
Wouldnt get a 570 or 6970 as for you I dont think it is a big enough difference form a 560ti.

A 7950 over clocked can catch up with the 7970 at stock, but then if you overclock the 7970 it will be better by a margin (but not that big of one), wether that margin is worth £100 is down to you.

Personally I was going to get a 7950 but I am now thinking of getting a 7970 just to have the best and be as future proof as possible, plus im running on 120hz so every fps helps.

I have two 7970s, one 7970 can run bf3 on ultra at 1920* at around 50 fps, crossfired 7970s only manage around 70-90 fps (in multiplayer, single player fps is like 100+ constantly)

The drivers seem bad, the cap profiles seem bad and the bf3 optimisation for the 7970 seems bad, so dont expect the 7970 to run bf3 ultra at crazy fps

Imo, overclocking a 7970 by 200mhz (conservative and easily attainable) is the same size performance increase from a stock 7950 to stock 7970 on top of a stock 7970 - Hope that makes sense?!

Stock clocks? as overlclocked a 7970 ramps up the fps in bf3

Thanks for the help guys. I guess my main concern is that if I buy a 7970, then as soon as Kepler comes out the 7970 is going to drop £100 in price... how likely do you think this is?

I personally don't believe so no.

If Kepler outperforms the AMD counterpart, I expect Nvidia will price them higher. Yes AMD might lower them a little but a £100? I don't think so.

People on here were confident that the 7950s would be selling <£300 by end of February.

What ever happened to easyrider wasn't he going to insert an banana where th sun don't shine?

Im still waiting...I saw a sheep with a banana in its ass earlier but I dont think that was easyrider, unless he morphed into a sheep, or maybe the banana turned him into a sheep, who knows.

I have a mildly clocked 7950, I dont monitor the framerate, but BF3 max is perfectly fine with no slowdown at all @ 1920 x 1080 .

look at benchmarks not peoples opinions ;)

what do you want ?

ultra at your res will only be 60 fps or just under on either a 7950 oc or a 7970

other than that two cards of something .

so even a 7970 at your res might not get 60 fps constant but should be very smooth. tbh ultra makes the game worse for mp . as it adds more crap in way and harder to see enemies .

6990 can do 65 fps and a nvidia 590 about 70 . but a lot dearer again.

This I agree with. Damned sharper gfx making the game harder to see the enemy :(

But if this you want then currently 7970/7950 or wait for Kepler IMO
