Precautions for building a PC, wristbands? mat's?

Hello everyone,

Been having a think and wondering what is needed when building a PC, along the lines of anti-static wristband's, mat's etc..?

I see the wristband's are cheap enough (around £5) but how do you use them? Obviously you put one end around your wrist, what about the other end? with the crocodile clip, where does that go?

I will be building the PC on a wooden desk, possibly with cardboard on it (heard this is okay, and cardboard sounds best, in my mind anyway) and any help will be appreciated.

Also, just a quick one, are non-magnetic tools necessary? I think most of my tools are magnetic, and I do NOT want to damage my PC!

Thanks, sorry for all the questions,
Cam

I have built many pc's and not used a anti-static wrist band, I just touch a earthed surface periodically like a radiator pipe.

Don't worry about tools being slightly magnetised, My tools re like this and not had any issues.

Okay awesome, is there like a bodged way to ground yourself? using some old wire and wrapping it around a radiator pipe and then around your wrist? Just a mad idea I come up with many times a day :D

Sorry, I normally look in the forums everyday and I must've missed it, sorry :(

Exactly the same here. Built a large amount of PC's from scratch and never had an issue with static buildup before without using any of the archiac precautions from yesteryear!

Sorry Luke, thank you everyone, I will make sure I touch a grounded surface frequently and will try not to continue my habit... shuffle my feet! :) Can't imagine how nervous I will be :/

Good luck, any issues ask here.

Dont forget the 4 or 8 pin connector for CPU power form the PSU when building, this often gets missed.

Oh yes, I will put that cable in first, before everything else, as I have heard the BitFenix Merc Cases have a small hole for them and they won't fit through if they don't split, well, if the motherboard is in place they don't fit...

My pc building screw driver is magnetized. And I just touch a radiator/pipe every time I return from shuffling off to rub my head with a balloon.

finished building my very first PC with a little bit of help from kmax86 the other day.

i just touched a bare part of a radiator every now and then, so far so good ,no dead components.
