GPU to play Battlefield 3 maxed out at 1920x1080p? (i7 920 @ 3.2ghz)

What would people recommend? I currently have a 560ti Twin Frozr II, it's good but lags when I turn everything up to ultra. I was considering a 7970 but I feel it may be overkill? Will a 7950 or a cheap GTX 570 do the job?

Thanks

I'm using a HD7950 (with a mild overclock) and play BF3 on ultra settings.

Mostly smooth so I'm happy enough.

Mostly?

Out of curiosity is there slowdown (maybe certain maps)?

I think sometimes it might be the server that I'm using that taints my view possibly.
Played a server last night for example and it was great, the night before another server and it was noticeably different.

Generally happy with HD7950/BF3 though :)

I can't run BF3 on Ultra and maintain good frames at 1920x1080 with a 2500k @4.3Ghz and a 570

This I agree with. Damned sharper gfx making the game harder to see the enemy :(

But if this you want then currently 7970/7950 or wait for Kepler IMO

Really? I'm loving full ultra on my 570, but what setting should I turn down to get things easier to spot?

Thanks,

G

I can't use full ultra (AA off) but I use medium settings if I intend to stay as a assault/engineer/support and use ultra (no AA) for recon.

I am level 71 but suck at the game, so in general pay no heed to me ,but I find this makes it easier for enemy spotting.

i nice cheap 5870,runs b3f at that res easily,on ultra settings too

No it simply doesnt.... it maye be able to run BF3 on ultra, but not 'easy' thats just false information, even a 6970 or 570 cant run BF3 at ultra 'easy' even with no AA, hell a 7970 cant run BF3 'easy' it only just about does a 60 fps, even then it can still struggle.

A 5870 may be able to run BF3 nice and smooth at ultra in single player or on less demanding maps/part of multiplayer maps but when on ultra (even with no AA) it will be anything but smooth on demanding maps unless your looking at the sky or a wall and like 30 fps.

My 7970, when at stock clocks gets between 55 and 110fps
At conservative overclocking settings I get between 65 and 110fps

1980x1080 with everything maxed out

The best you can hope for with an overclocked 7950 is between my stock and overclocked settings.

At preset Ultra or your own definition of ultra? I ask because the last time I checked my 7970 at stock clocks would dip as low as 38 in the worst areas but would go as high as 85-90 in some areas, averaging about 55-60.

What drivers and cap are you using? The lowest I've seen it in xfire when the 2 cards are at 99% usage is 72fps.

it will avg about 55 fps on mp which is same as a 580 gtx :)

anyone can say i play on ultra but your avg fps is what matters or lowest. if you want ultra you really want two cards or just wait till there is a single card to do over 60 fps easy.

Prices have to come down.

No they don't. The 5 series Nvidia cards haven't come down, even with the 79xx cards around.

At best the initial Kepler card might make the price of one of AMD's drop a little, but the bottom line is there is only one Kepler launch card.

Nvidia have gone on and on about a shortage of wafers and how expensive they are, so don't expect them to break their historic trend of buggery upon launch.

My 560Ti never gives any major lag on ultra and that's with a Q6600 at stock. If you have the 1Gb version then that may be a difference. Whatever GPU you buy, don't settle for 1Gb. It just doesn't cut it on modern games such as Battlefield.

Indeed, everyone expected the GTX580 cards to drop in price (including me) when the 7900s were released but well.

It's almost like AMD and Nvidia have agreed to maintain there price structure without affecting each other.
Stranger things have happened in business.

Preset Ultra, and it never drops below 60fps. Imo overclocking these cards by 200mhz overcomes a lot of the fps drops. Using the RC11 driver, and no caps as i'm on a single card!

go on 64 man full caspian border server and do ultra everythnig and msaax4

do a fraps 1 min bench run :) then show avg min and max. i think youll find it will drop below 60 and it will avg about 55 fps

the funny thing about this is anyone with a 6970/6950oc or 570 gtx could do 60 fps at this res with the fx injector on . i have tried it and done it. so 400 quid or a free mod and risk a kick from pb hmmm which do you fo for ?

if you check these benchies look at results at 1920x1080

look at what he got single card at 1080 . a overclocked 6970 580 will practically get that.
