I suspect the HD7870 should be in between an HD6950 and HD6970.

It looks the GPU is going to be smaller than the one in the HD6870.

Its replacing the HD6870 so it will be faster.

You mean a 6870?

So that means the 7950 replaces the 6950 for double the price and the 7970 replaces the 6970 for almost double the price.

The problem is the 6870 is a cheap card and has been for a while. I suspect these cards are going to cost as much as a 560ti and 570 respectively and lose then.

Meh. The HD6870 1GB was not a cheap card at launch too - you could get HD5850 1GB cards(for less) and HD5870 1GB cards(for a bit more) and the same thing will happen with the HD7800 series. The cheap HD5850 1GB cards also made the HD6850 look poorer value.

I realised for years,that in the sub £200 market upgrading behind the curve makes more sense,as you get better value for money now.

The current prices of the HD6850 1GB,GTX460 1GB,HD6870 1GB and GTX560TI 1GB under £170 make them excellent value for money for most gamers.

It really isn't, it's launching at $299, same as the 6950 did, so that's the card it's replacing.

The 7850 is replacing the 6870 card. They've moved the entire range of 7000 cards up in price by one segment each.

Naming scheme had no meaning for a good few years now.

How does that make it a nice card, it will be slower than both GTX570 or HD6970 and if it comes at £250, it will be simply laughable.

I said under £250 buddy, also remember 2GB GTX 570 costs what about £280 - £300?

So if HD 7870 2GB comes in at under £250 and performance is around the GTX 570 but uses less power, overclocks better it's still nice card..

Im sure these will clock up to GTX 580 performance...

Im sure these will clock up to GTX 580 performance...

it most likely won't overclock better than the GTX570 in terms of performance
it's not going to be as fast as the GTX 570
it won't clock up to GTX580, it's already clocked at 1GHz
who buys GTX570 2.5GB anyway?

This article quotes $199 as the price of the 7870.

If that was true, the card would be a bargain. £150 for a card slightly exceeding the 6950 performance? Do want.

Not long till launch, so Gibbo will hopefully bench it and give us his feedback. Price wise I would hope but don't expect it to be cheaper than £200

AMD are going to want rid of the 69xx once these two cards launch. Had the 6850 and 6870 all of a sudden become unavailable then no doubt they would have gotten better reviews of the 7770.

The very fact that the 6850 and 70 were still around just ended up embarrassing them.

It's kinda like Intel competing with themselves by releasing the I3 clarkdale. In gaming it almost made the I5 750 pointless.

Not a mistake they repeated on Sandy, as they simply locked down all of the budget CPUs so that they could not perform with their high end counterparts.
