The Mobile World Congress 2012 thread

As has been said in this thread by a few, I really don't see the point of this years android phones, they don't offer anything new/worthwhile over the others [except for slightly better battery life probably] (especially over the GS 2 and GN for speed/smoothness) and are most certainly not worth the expense of cancelling contracts/selling old mobiles to fund the new ones.

However, HTC's range looks much better software and hardware wise and I can see them doing pretty well this year (if priced right).

So in the end it comes down to software/support once again, which IMO is still stock android and the galaxy nexus;

- stock ICS android, no skins
- no apps by Samsung, HTC etc. taking up space etc. which will never be used
- guaranteed to receive all the latest updates officially straight away and not be waiting 3+ months for them to come
- know that you will receive every android update officially up to at least version 6

And for those last 2 points, it means that you don't need to root and flash custom ROMs whilst having a few little niggles and possibly the risk of bricking your mobile whilst voiding your warranty! :D

In your opinion. Some people find the plain Android OS boring. Rooting and trying different ROMs is what Android is all about. I have tried them all and for me Sense 3.5 is still the best ROM.

I'm looking forward to the One X with ICS Sense.

Of course it is in my opinion, every one has different tastes :)

I could see people finding all versions before stock ICS boring, but now I just can't see how, as the new UI and features are great and far better than any skin now IMO

And the reasons (along with the high res. screen) I mentioned in my previous post is why quite a few people went from the GS 2 to the GN.

Rooting and trying different ROMs is not what android is about, this applies to a very very small minority and the only things, which these offer are;

- customization of the notification bar and the colour scheme throughout the menus etc. the layout is still pretty much the same regarding menus etc. for every mobile running android. Yes new features are brought in as well, but they aren't exactly necessary really

- speed and smoothness, this was very important back in the days when the desire was top dog as android was not very well optimized especially for the slightly lower spec. mobiles, now a days this really isn't an issue, the galaxy S2, sensation, galaxy nexus etc. all are blazingly fast and smooth (when the other mobiles that don't have HW acceleration currently get ICS officially that is, which should be within the next few months). The only other main thing, which is beneficial especially for the HTC mobiles is battery life gain from custom ROMs

- Only a handful of apps require root access and are mainly the apps that can force uninstall stock apps. The only app that I have seen and use, which is useful is adfree

IMO

Android is all about choice and what people want to do with their mobiles regarding 3rd party apps (yes rooting and flashing custom ROMs does fall into this category in some ways but as said it isn't why people solely buy android devices and isn't something that any of the companies advertise either :p). If people are bored of whatever skin be it sense, touchwiz or stock, you can simply install one of the many apps on the market to achieve a completely different result e.g.

- want the windows 7 layout, simply install launcher 7
- want the iphone layout, simply install espier launcher
- want a launcher where you can get some cool widgets, which can be skinned along with a ton of other options for customizing the homescreens or app drawer, install go launcher, launcher pro or ADW launcher etc.

Same goes for everything else, your browser, messaging app, music player, widgets, gallery etc. etc.

Personally I hate the current sense versions, far too many features, which never get used and a ton of sub menus, which is why most people think of it as being bloated and laggy, thankfully HTC have admitted that themselves and by the looks and sounds of it, have gone back to what sense was originally supposed to be a clean, minimal pretty looking OS :)

Both of those are shameful impersonations. Why anyone would use them instead of having the actual device they want is completely bizarre. :p

I too hope they have improved Sense, the leaked versions of ICS Sense for the Sensation looked absolutely awful but they seem to have changed it again for the new phones.

I would generally agree. I bought the Desire pretty much on release and the ability to load custom ROMs has kept the Desire new and fresh. Interestingly the best battery life and performance always comes from modified Sense ROMs specifically the ones based on RunnyMeade. I like the Sense Email, Messaging and general phone functions, works for me.

From the look of it I will be looking to move to the One X on launch assuming it lives up to the hype when I have it in my hand.
