4GB to 8GB. Worth upgrading?

Hi there and welcome to the OCUK forums :)

Performance increase from 4GB to 8GB really depends on what you are doing with the PCs and what the full specifications are. If you can tell us these things we should be able to tell you whether that upgrade is worthwhile.
 
Apparently, going to 8gb on BF3 makes quite a difference. Are we talking DDR3 ram? I wouldn't bother buying DDR2 ram as you'll only have to replace it again when you next upgrade.

Tell me about it. I do a lot of development work and tend to need VMWare as well. I have 4GB DDR2. My dilemma is do I buy 2x2GB more RAM for twice what I paid for the stuff I have, or do I use it as an excuse to by an Ivy system when it comes out?

I think we all know the answer to this... :)

I reckon 8gb is the sweet spot at the moment. 4gb is the new 'just enough' that 2gb was when Vista came out ;)

Seriously though, 8gb just gave me the flexibility to run what programs I want etc without having to give memory usage a second thought.

For example: Currently using 2.58gb out of 8gb coz I cba to close any programs etc.
 
assuming it's DDR3, for the price of ram at the minute there's no real reason not to. that said, if you can answer the following question first people can give you a fuller answer.

for what its worth with bf3 sitting in the background waiting to launch a game and browsing I'm only using ~2gb ram. so you may not see an actual visible increase in performance
 
Depends if you are running a 32 or 64bit OS.

If 32bit then surely its a waste???

64bit then go for it as DDR3 RAM is dirt cheap at the moment

As above, it really depends what you do.

I noticed quite a big difference, especially when exiting from memory hungry games.

Considering the price of DDR3 at the moment, you may as well go for 16GB :D

16GB is around £70 at the moment.

Well worth filling those slots while memory is still cheap.
