EVGA GTX 580 3072MB or Gainward GTX 580 "Phantom" 3072MB

Hi there, If you are willing to spend £450 on a graphics card, I would strongly suggest you wait a month for Nvidia to release their next-generation 28nm Kepler cards - which should offer a lot more performance for this budget.

If you don't want to wait, then I would strongly suggest you go for a HD 7970 3GB instead of a GTX 580 3GB - as the 7970 is certainly the faster card (see here).

Or you could get a 7950 3Gb for less money which gives the same or better performance and the stock coolers on the new Radeon's are apparently a lot better then the old 6000 series.

Out of the two cards your looking at the Gainward has a better cooler but it does dump heat into the case so you would need a case with good air circulation to prevent your other components getting too toasty. The EVGA uses the traditional stock cooler which shoves the heat out the back of the case, there noisier but ideal for those with users who worry about where the heat goes. Still there both way over priced for what they offer.
 
Doesn't CUDA really help in workstations?

The Phantom would be the quieter card, but it is still poor value at the mo. Another month may hopefully see a Kepler release.
 
If the OP were to buy now, (which i certainly don't recommend) then i'd get the EVGA.

£50 for 7 years extra warranty and great CS? yes please!

Obviously, different people will value CS differently

That's if it's the ten year one. Be sure to check first ! AR and KR apparently are different !

Whilst not far off, id still say it's worth it. one of the reasons is EVGA have excellent CS so even when the card is in the 3 yr period where it is still owrth something, then you can rest assured that an RMA will be processed quickly.
