What is a hot hatch....

I think people are reading to far into it. A hot hatch is literally just that, a standard hatch back thats been tinkered with to take it to a level that succeeds far past the standard example in performance. It doesn't matter if a focus RS is quicker than a twingo 133, they are both hot hatches. Its about taking a normal every day hatch back and making it an absolutely hoot to drive in comparison to the standard.

People need to stop comparing different makes and models of cars, a hot hatch is defined by the differences it has to its OWN base model.

Shocker, as current modern day hot hatchback is bigger than 1976 hot hatchback

Shocker, the Vauxhall Cavalier (a 20+ year old hatchback) bigger than a current modern day hatchback

Stop trolling

Yes, of course, because pointing out how illogical your opinion is 'trolling'.

The Lupo GTi is a hot hatch, but it doesn't have the iconic status that the Golf has, the Golf was the first car to ever be called a hot hatch

So the Golf GTI is a hot hatch even though the Lupo GTI exists.
But the Focus ST isnt a hot hatch because the Fiesta ST exists.

Yes, right.

My girlfriends doesn't have stripes, its completely standard too

I think she's victim of 'girl in fastish car syndrome' rather than it being just the car. I remember when I went out with a girl who had a red FN2 Civic type r, way more people would try it on with her driving than when they did with another mate (who drives a near identical car on the same roads!).

This? So by your own agreement with alexisonfire, a hot hatch is "defined by the differences it has to its OWN base model."

So A Focus ST which among other noticeable changes, has an I5 Turbo engine under the bonnet, generating 221BHP, 79BHP more than the most powerful base model Focus, isn't a hot hatch?

And as also said before, a Mondeo has a hatchback configuration, doesn't make it a hot hatch though, so consequently a Cavalier, which in it's last carnation was marketed as the Opel Vectra A, then it was directly replaced by the Vectra B, and you're expecting it to be a supermini? Of course a Vectra is going to be bigger than most modern day standard hatchbacks (Focus, Astra, Golf etc.)

Subjective Fox, lets agree on that

Personally, whether the focus is a hatchback or not, I see it as a family car, compare that to a "hot hatch" such as a Lupo GTi, hardly a family car is it

Your logic is fail. If a Focus ST is a family car, a Lupo GTI is a tinny little just-passed-your-test car.

Errrr no Howard, I've seen plenty of Focus ST's with 4 people in them, ever seen a Lupo with 4 people in? Hell I struggle to get 4 in my 206, despite it being a 5 seater.

Anything with the letters GTi in the name is hardly a "just-passed-your-test-car" is it?

You don't really get the idea of a discussio, do you? You don't scream 'SUBJECTIVE' at the first sign your opinion is contrary to most others.

A Focus is pretty much the textbook definition of 'A hatchback' and the ST is the 'hot version'.

I've just realised I'm trying to have a rational debate about cars with somebody who bought a 206 :(

You bought a Vauxhall, if you sig is anything to go by, what does that say about you? At least you're not trying to defend Saxo's lol

So now, we've moved on to the defintion of a hot hatch is judged by if you've got more than one passenger with you? Dear, oh, dear.

There is no unified definition, I've said like 4 times now it's subjective.

The is only certain criteria like small and powerful

This wikipedia page sums it up pretty well, and yeah I know it mentions the Focus ST, but like I've said before, personally, I don't consider it a hot hatch

So there we have it - the Focus ST. Considered a 'hot hatch' by everyone except somebody who drives a Peugeot 206.

Yeah because Wikipedia constitutes the entire population when it can be edited by anyone.

And how does driving a 206 have any baring on my opinion? I could have bought any car, I bought a 206 because it ticked all the boxes at the time, looking back I would have bought a Golf

Vehicles of this class are based on family-oriented automobiles, and are equipped with an uprated more powerful internal combustion engine, improved suspension, and may also include additional 'aerodynamic' body parts and larger wheels and tyres.
