We are in the early stages of planning a move to Australia, and I was wondering if anybody has any information, tips or advice about doing so?

We are a young family of 1 child and are planning on having at least 1-2 more in the future.

We have begun to look at the cost of living, and it seems that although some things are more expensive than in the UK, others are cheaper. Overall, it seems to even out such that the cost of living is similar to that of the UK. Please correct me if I'm wrong ...

We have heard contradictory things regarding the education system over there (i.e. better or worse than UK) - if anyone has any information on this regard that would be great, as ultimately the move is to improve our children's futures.

Does anyone know what the country is like for a young family? Is it a 'good' place for our children to grow up? Anything to be aware of (except the 'wildlife')?

I could go on ... any advice or information welcome :)

Parents moved there 2 years ago - sister went through high school there. Email in trust if you need any help mate.

Not as of yet, but we are planning to.

Do this first. Then start thinking because you really shouldnt plan to live somewhere you've not experienced, the grass is always greener...

Also, you need to make sure they'll actually have you. It isn't particularly easy to get a Visa.

My family nearly moved there in 2001. The company my dad was were messing around with moving dates so we never went in the end.

A few points:
1) People tend to pay for private schools, so I am guessing that state schools are poor
2) Tax is high but you claim it back (sorry but that is all the detail I am aware of!)
3) You really need to visit the place before considering moving seriously
4) You need a skill that they need. Unlike the UK, they don't let any old useless muppet into the country!

We are aware that there is a point system and according to the Australian government website, her skill is in very high demand. (Educational Psychologist)

Do you have guaranteed work over there? Do you qualify to move there? Wher about are you looking at?

Where about in Australia, it is a big place? Have lots of family in Perth/Sydney and my girlfriend worked in Melbourne and the university for quite a time. I personally loved the place, just always felt a little remote from the rest of the world. I loved the weather, how relaxed things felt and the general way of life. The education system is meant to be much better than ours too.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Sounds like you'd lack the points required to qualify for residency tbh, that would be the first thing I'd be checking.

I think Berger is currently living in Australia having emigrated, Evangelion lives there after a few years of living here although he is Australian, Zip is another member who is actually Australian. divaboy is or was living in Australia if memory serves and there's doubtless a few more. [FnG]Magnolia is living in New Zealand having moved there fairly recently but may have some useful suggestions.

I've got a cousin and some friends living out in Australia just now and they recommend it highly but that's not to say it's without downside - it's just that the downsides aren't particularly significant to them although they may be for you. It's definitely a good idea to go out there and stay for a while to see if it might suit you, especially with a young child.

1. You should visit there at least once and for an extended period of time.
2. Check your ability to enter and live in the country (points).

These are the two things you should be considering before you get any further. Considering you're doing this for your kid's future - which is admirable - you don't seem to know a great deal about the country you intend to live in and have never visited before. Why Australia?

We only started considering it seriously this morning after my partner found out she could go over there for 6 months as part of her PhD and its fully paid for.

Don't mean to hijack thread but it may help op and other readers, are there any agencies who help you find work in Oz and help you relocate i.e. sort out visas, find somewhere to live etc.

Edit: I am also considering to relocate.
