Buying a 6950

Ye , might be worth waiting , my second pc runs a msi twin frozr 6950 though and its a terrific card , i would recommend it if you do go down the 6950 road.

I liked it so much that my main pc uses 2 GTX 580 3gb cards in sli and i bought msi lightning extreme edition cards based on how much i liked the msi twin frozr 6950 !

I have had a few 6950's and the HIS ICEQ X is one of the best. The cooler is very quite even under load. They have been on and off offer for £199 for months now. I was hoping they would drop down a bit more since the 79xx series release maybe when the 78xx come along they will get a bit cheaper.

There's no such thing as a 3GB HD 6950.

sorry, got that confused with the 79** series :(

been away from the pc side of things for to long. I use mac's normally ;)

thanks for the info guys, will wait to see what these 78** cards had and with this Kepler news should be an interesting month.

This +1
I have the HIS 6950 ice Q X plus, very good cards. Overclocks very well and stays cool and quiet.

mine overclocked only gets to 75oC when using furmark, in games it doesnt go above 60 and i cant hear it

Mine only goes about 60C overclocked to 6970 speeds if the wife puts the heating up to 28C +. Under normal ambient temps it gets to a max of 60C playing BF3 and is normally in the high fifties.

If anyone is getting 80C without crazy overclocking contact MSI and they normall ask you to refit the heatsync/fans or just send it back for a replacement.

Yeah this, is that other one who says it's loud and @ 80C running it inside a vacuum??

MSI TwinF is a good choice and so is the IceQ if you're going for a 6950.

Also to confirm what someone said before, if you're playing on a single monitor at 1080p or lower then there's nothing those cards won't handle at the moment.
My TwinF didn't unlock but I haven't had any sleepless nights over the lost few shaders, still play all games on max settings. It doesn't make any difference except some numbers in a benchmark. Real life use, it works... I hate people who think "omg shaders don't unlock, **** card"

Yeah , i have to say my twinF doesn't get hot either but it is in a well cooled case.

The thing about the unlocking is we all bought a 6950 card at a 6950 price.

The unlocking shaders to make like 6970 is a possibility of free performance , not something that people are "entitled" to have .
Its a bit like buying a raffle ticket, luck of the draw haha :p
