So just got an Asus 8800GT 512mb (PCI-E x16 2.0)

The computer works fine just using on board graphics

Motherboard: gigabyte ga-m68sm-s2l
The expansion slot is PCI-E x16 1.0 (i think)

I know the card works correctly as i have tested it in another rig

i know that 2.0 cards should be backwards compatible with 1.0 boards
so why isnt it working?! :o

when i boot the computer with the new card it just doesnt give me any display
i have a 600w psu with a true 6pin cable

any ideas?
do i need a new board or should i get another graphics card (i can put the 8800gt to good use in another pc)

Thank in advance

FIX: flashed the bios of gpu
Bios found at manufacturer website

Thank you everyone for your help and support (Y)

Ensure you're using the display outputs on the card? Tried a BIOS update? Made sure that the settings in the BIOS is correct so it sets the 8800 as the primary display (if it has this setting)? What PSU model is it?

I havnt tried to update the bios, I'll try that when I get home, it is a 600w JeanTech Artic PSU
Yes the power cable is in as if it were not it would boot normally and crash or give 1 long beep code, indicating that the gpu is somehow 'wrong'

I think that's a possible cause of the problem... a poorly made PSU...

The PSU may not be a true 600w PSU, it may only be the peak power which only lasts a split second. Even then, the components are usually very unreliable and cheap in order to keep costs down. They may even leave out protection curcuits to protect therest of the PC too. Also, not to mention the fact the majority of that power may not even be going to the GPU. Considering it's a JeanTech, I would dump that thing away as you're risking your system. If it blows up, there's a chance it will take out the rest of your system. A good reliable 400-500w PSU is enough for your system.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus' Power Supply (CMPSU-430CXUKV2) £39.98
Total : £50.48 (includes shipping : £8.75).

If you want to stay cheap, this 430w Corsair is enough to power everything.

I know that some older motherboards with PCIE1 are not compatible with some older 8800s, this was cured by updating bios on the 8800, not the motherboard. My Dell had that problem with 8800gts back in the day, updated the GPU bios and everything was fine after that.

How may i go about updating the bios of the GPU?

I will take the psu out of my current rig (Enermax Galaxy 1000W) and try it with the failing rig

£50 for a CX 430 ! I paid £34 shipped and would never again.

It's nothing like Corsair's other power supplies.

How may i go about updating the bios of the GPU?

I do not remember exact details now, but basically there were two ways: blind flash or putting the card into machine where it works and updating BIOS there in the usual fashion.

Just google "VIA chipset 8800gt" for more info ;)

You should download the latest BIOS which looks to be Version V62.92.12.00.AS01.

BIOS works independently from OS, so whether it will be used on WinXP or Win7 does not matter for GPU's bios (this only matters for drivers, which you do not need to worry about for now).

Thank you very much, i will try this now and let you know how i get on (Y)

But like I said, you need to google around, not all manufacturers released VIA BIOS updates, so if (IF) ASUS was one of them (ie their lates bios still has that probllem unsolved) you'll need to reflash with BIOS from another manufacturer that is compatible with your card. I had Inno3d 8800gts, and luckily for me they did release this update, but not all did. It was a major pain in the neck, I still remember it...

okay so the 8800GT is in my computer now, currently working fine,
my current bios information : Version 62.92.16.0.4
it would appear the download from the asus website has not been sucessful in flashing the bios of the card

im unsure what step 3 wants me to do..
it gives no place for me to type 'y'
a DOS window comes and goes too quick to read

The SOP of windows flash tool for VGA BIOS.
1. Unzip the zip file to a directory
2. Run EN8800GT.exe
3. key in "y" to flash VGA BIOS
4. Restart PC
5. Done

How do i know if another manufactures bios is compatible?

Did you flash it from within windows or from floppy disc/usb drive?

If from windows (did you say you have it working in win7), make sure you run the .exe as administrator. Cant think of much else... You sure your card is the right version?

So your minitor is plugged into your 8800 and it works fine? Or are you trying to do this from integrated graphics and 8800 not installed properly?

It needs to be the foremr, not the latter.
