Apologies, was posting at work and didn't have the time to type an opinion. I can now.
Perks of the job eh?

I am all in favour of legislative changes aimed at stopping theft![]()
Only an idiot would use Torrents.

I'm sorry, but how has everyone skipped over the most important part of all this - if you are accused of internet infringement, you can be disconnected from the internet. Note accused, not convicted.
Big media, who have a known history of sending out bogus claims of infringement, can now get your internet cut off, leaving it up to you to appeal what they CLAIM you did wrong? I've been flabbergasted about this since the second I first heard about it. Why do people think "I don't download, this doesn't impact me" when this is patently irrelevant? If you are on the internet, there is a chance of being falsely ACCUSED and being kicked off as a result. How is this acceptable to anyone?
I love how people on this site think they are superior because they pay to pirate, I tried newsgroups and they are a pain in the arse,
A decent private torrent community will get you any files found on newsgroups just as quick and just as anonymously
Not really. Using Torrents for illegal activity is the same as any minor crime. Only idiots would speed, many do. Only idiots would smoke cannabis, many do. The fact that the chance of getting caught and subsequently convicted and punished are so low that to waste money on attempting not to get caught is rather daft.
As for private trackers, I'd use them if anyone ever invited me. But surely the larger ones have more people and thus faster for popular stuff?
I also guarantee that if that happened, the ECHR would overturn it.
I'm sorry but, **** you.Christine Payne, general secretary of the Actors' union Equity, called on the ISPs to "stop fighting and start obeying the law".
I'm sorry but, **** you.
Yes in light of all these changes, it will be the 'simpleton' out there that sticks with Torrents (as newsgroups are far to 'complex', he/she will then receive a letter(s), ignore it, and then cut off. Then they will probably try to sell their story to the press about how they are innocent and the big mean evil company cut them off.
all of the above whilst the tech savy will move onto other ways to obtain their material and pay for the access via newsgroups.
True, but that surely can't make it even remotely acceptable to you that this exists in the first place?
What's with all this blaming it on business models of the media & entertainment industry as justification that its your god given right to download copyright protected material?
I am not saying that priacy is correct or a right of any kind rather that the media and entertainment industry would be better served by using their money to provide and online service that provides a viable alternative to the numerous illegal download sites out there. Instead they are making the lawyers richer and burying their heads in the sand.
But like I said, what about the smaller people?
For example, the small team that develops some kind of program or app, only for it to be shared on P2P sites. Put yourself in their shoes.
Not the best example tbh as any decent app developer would ensure that his licensing model would ensure that sharing the app on p2p would be pointless.
Not impossible to do I know several small app developers who do this sucesfully.

For every story of a small artist or developer who is complaining about copyright infringement, there are 10 story's of small people using it to their advantage, and actually making more money as an end result. The perspective of "Someone has a copy, I should have some money" whilst morally just, is immature. The reality is that there are pirates, the will get your work and complaining about it and trying to legislate against it does nothing to abate them, but ****es off genuine users and alienates fans. Its not about whats right or wrong, its about dealing with the reality that they find themselves in, and time and again the best solution has been show to be innovation.
