I've tried using this thinkbroadband tool but it's just registering as 100% packet loss. Any idea how to make it work? On the site it says "ensure that it allows ICMP ping" I can't find such an option in my router settings (using DD WRT).

Never mind I think I found it. It was called "Block Anonymous WAN Requests (ping)" under the security tab.

does this mean after 6days i'll get a new IP?

Network Configuration
WAN IP Address xxxxxxxx
Duration D: 06 H: 23 M: 59 S: 58
Expires Sun Mar 11 23:10:05 2012
WAN Subnet Mask xxxxxxx
WAN Default Gateway xxxxxxxx
WAN Primary DNS xxxxxxxx
WAN Secondary DNS xxxxxxxxx
WAN Third DNS 0.0.0.0

Going going gone...

...well not quite. Called up today as despite a promise to reply to my email over a week ago no-one yet has.

They were happy for me to leave - now have a month to get a phone line installed and find a new provider.

Heads up for anyone leaving VM and doesn;t have a BT phone. Post Office are doing free installations until 31st March, saving over £100. They are also doing a £50 bill reduction too.

What does the 6db forward path attenuator do? There was one in back of my modem. I took it out and it seems to make no difference at all.
It limits the power coming from the cab. If the power is too high it can cause problems. It was probably put there by the installation engineer for that reason.

This I have one too and was talking to the Tech that installed my Tivo box and its todo with how close you are to your local node and how much power your getting down the line.

Guys,

I'm getting terrible internet quality atm at peak times due to over-utilisation in my area. I have posted on virgin media forums but judging by the number of compliants, I am not hopeful at all tbh.

I am on the old 20mb package still. would upgrading to any of the newer packages give me better pings at peak times? Or are they all the same UBR?

I don't have BT phone line and would be expensive to install, please advise me asap.

This Thinkbroadband monitor is becoming the graphics card benchmark of internet connections.

If people are happy with their connection (same as if they were happy with their frame rate), then who cares what a monitor says! :)

Its good for diagnosing problems, but I think it should only be used for just that. Those Speedtest and Pingtest results look very solid, so I'd be happy with just that.

You could try but I dout it'd help. Why would BT be expensive to install? It cost me a whopping £0.

Because unless you want some crap call package that's useless for a broadband only line and you make 10 calls a month, they charge you £130 for a new installation. Plus you then under contract.

Post Office are doing an offer atm. Free line installation for all orders before 31st March.

Plus it's a monthly rolling contract.

You can then look at what LLU providers you have in your area and take you pick of solid stable broadband.
