1GB 560ti vs 2GB...with a twist.

I would have been tempted to go for the GTX480 at £185.00. Plenty of VRAM for 1080 even with all @ Ultra in BF3 and it's faster than the 560Ti

I don't have the other cards to do a comparison but the noise of the GTX480 is exaggerated slightly. Yes, you can hear it when the card gets hot but as long as you keep airflow in the case moving it shouldn't really bother you. If it's really a concern a Zalman or Arctic Cooling GPU cooler would fix it :)

+1 .

How loud is the 480 by comparison?

If you see Gazjam's post here...

...he's putting the 560Ti Phantom it into an HTPC, and not in the rig seen in his signature. The 480 would have been a bit on the noisy and warm side for his HTPC setup.

As for how loud the 480 is in comparison to the 560Ti: I can't find any reviews of the Phantom that also have recorded noise levels but those reviews do mention that it makes less noise than a stock 560Ti cooler. In 560Ti reviews that feature a stock cooler and have recorded noise levels, they put it between somewhere between 10db to 15db quieter than a stock 480 cooler at full load.

Having owned a GTX480 and a 560Ti, it's like night and day.

The 480 is riduculously loud under load and pumps a metric ton of heat out.

The 560Ti runs very cool, and was inaudible even under full load.

I'd take a 560Ti over a 480 any day.

Performance should always come first then heat and noise. You can deal with heat and noise more than you can deal with hindering performance. If noise is an issue get yourself an aftermarket cooler and problem solved. Seems daft to me to pay more for something which is less :(

Not for me. I can't enjoy the game if all I can hear is:
WHHHHHIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Which is all you can hear with a GTX480 :p

I'd take a slightly slower card that was silent, over a noisy card that was a faster any day.

People can accept different levels of noise. For me the 480 other than at idle was FAR FAR too loud.

It's not like my rig is silent, I'm not a nutjob who passive cools everything and has all his hdd's suspended with bungee cord!

I've got a 200mm, 4 x Apache's and whatever's in my PSU whirring away at a moderate RPM.

If I can hear the GPU clearly over every other fan in my system... then the GPU cooler is too loud, simple as that.

The 480 honestly sounds like a hairdryer on a medium setting once it gets warmed up, it's not a noise I'm willing to put up with no matter what performance it brings.

And there is no reason to put up with it either, there are many cards out there that offer great performance without costing you your hearing ;)

+ Warranty = instantly gone :p

True. But you cant open the windows when its -10 out on a cold winters night.

Its like when i went for the x1900xt crossfire edition card to go with my x1900xtx just as the 8800gtx was released. Was the cheaper alternative to spending 500quid on the gtx and got very similar performance in the games that were out.

In the end the noise, power requirements and especially the heat was just way too much. It was seriously like 50c in my room with them dam things. So got a 8800gts 320 instead. Less performance but I was happier.

Hehe yep warranty is lost unless of course you can re-assemble the original cooler and fit it back on the card. What 3rd party cooler? :D

Watercooling obviously offers the best results but for a cheap fix one of these would do the job.

Hehe, I notice it after a few hours of gaming but I usually strip off  put my fan on or open the window to cool down. The screen I'm using generates quite a bit of heat too. The combination of both keeps me warm all year round..

A friend of mine is an air conditioning engineer. Thinking about speaking to him nicely to see if I can get something hooked up for the summer :D
