Guys

Running an I5 2500K on a ASUS P8Z68 Gen 3 board!

CPU is overclocked to 4.2Ghz, with 1.3Vcore with a -0.0.40 offset!

Stepping is enabled, but the problem I feel I have is that even when in idle, the multilier is jumping around crazy. Will idle for a few seconds then pop up to 22, then up to 39 then back down to 16.. There is no pattern, totally random.

Anyone give me any info of why this is happening, would love to be able to have the chip idle at x16 as it is supposed to do!

Thanks

The CPU is never really idle. There are lots of services running and begging for some processor time. Some of them don't use much CPU and some need more. Your multiplier changes as demand requires. When people talk about idle they normally mean not under extreme load, which is usually a smaller, but faster changing, load. If you want to equate load to multiplier install Core Temp (tells you core load and temp) and CPU-Z (tells you multiplier/CPU frequency). Then you'll see that jumps/drops in core load drive jumps/drops in multiplier.

As above really, it'll just be background processes using CPU power, so the CPU ups it multiplier accordingly. To be truly idle you'd need no programs/back ground processes running. The fact that it goes down to 16 shows that it is working as it should.

Odd, as mine sits at x16 whilst im web browsing and doing basic tasks. It only jumps up to x43 when doing anything more taxing. Mine is only ever at x16 or x43.

I do think it should spend more time at 16x.

I normally need to run something at least semi heavy for the cpu to to jump up at all.

Question, When running some sort of stress testing, IBT for example. Does the system sit at 4.2 steady, and you get constant results or does it switch speeds when its should be running at full speed.

wow, mine go all over the place, when 'idle' its only one core that really seems to go to higher multiplier, guess that means the 'Cool & Quiet' stuff is working as intended, goes up under heavy load as well depending on thread count so Turbo works alright as well. as long as its causing no issues would be too concerned about it, normal for multipliers to go up and down.

Some good Guess work there, mainly directly comparing amd to intel when im pretty sure they are a little different.

Also my comment about when its under full load, was due to had some overclocks that were not as stable as i thought. When the system was running at 4.5 (with incorrect settings) it was throttling back down, which wasn't good!

mine also never goes anything other than X16 or X45 eist and stepping on need to load a game to see it move.
