Does anybody know of a Gran Turismo type game for PC? By this I mean a game with real cars, that has a long-ish career mode, good long tracks, good physics (you have to actually brake) etc.

You know what I mean :P

DiRT is all rally (if I'm not mistaken)
Blur is not realistic
Trackmania is too surreal
NFS series doesn't appeal and doesn't seem to satisfy the requirements above.

Anyone got any more ideas?

The series above is OK, decent Graphics, Better than GT5 physics.
Ihavent done the career mode though, and its mostly race cars only.
TBH, multiplayer is where its at for racing sims anyway ;)

Pus, its by far better physics than any you mentioned above, and half the price :D

I want to do single player stuff tbh :P Like work my way up from bad cars until good cars, and using money to upgrade stuff like brakes, turbo etc.

There isn't one that compares to GT5 or Forza really, Assetto Corsa looks promising though and that's supposed to be coming out this year.

Shift 2 unleashed is as close as your going to get..

Long carrer lots of cars which all feel unique brilliant graphics and lots of mods and car tuning.

Me and my mate where big gt fans but after the mess that was gt5.... we rate this better, but dont forget to add the juls mod for much better physx

Shift 2 is your only option for single player i'm pretty sure. Very good graphics, physics are a crossbreed of sim and arcade, but plenty good enough to have lots of fun on Nurburgring. Especially once you lower ride hight, suspension softness and tyres pressure (which are all on max by default for some stupid reason).

I have not played GT5 unfortunately, so physics comparison is impossible for me. But real etalons of physics are iRacing, Live For Speed, NKarPro. Single player in nonexistant in all of them unfortunately.

Grid is absolutely the best arcade-with-a-joypad driving game of all time in my eyes, but it's completely different to GT and even SHift2 approach - those games are really meant to be played with a wheel.

Yeah, you guys are getting what I want :P

I may try out Shift. Not sold on the decision yet. Grid is another one I was looking at. Same for Test Drive Unlimited 2.

Reason I do not just get GT5 is price. I can get one of these for a fiver when its on sale, and GT5 is still kinda expensive.

ive not actually ever tried cars haha but if you check out some of the shots in the hi res thread in this sub forum youl be gobsmacked. lighting gives cryengine aserious runfor its money

Shift2, not Shift ;) And it was on sale @ Origin for £4 couple of weeks ago, dont know if it expired though...
Yeah, Shift 2, that is what I meant :P Too much effort writing 2 each time :P haha. Yeah, it expired. I went to check. Oh well. I'll wait ;)
Its a pre-alfa (ie not even beta), so its about a year away from its release and thus lacks in single player content at the moment.

Ah, fair enough. I'll pass then.
