***HD7800 Series Reviews***

I always liked the little 5850, I still have one ;), Very interesting results !

Quite, I got a launch 5850 for the price of £189. What a purchase, only changed it out at Christmas and it was still kicking ass. Kepler needs to arrive soon and decent prices and epic performance to change anything

I won't be changing from my 5850 either, benefits of gaming on a 19" LCD :) So AMD can stick their overpriced cards where the sun don't shine.

i'm forced to change from my 11 months old xtreme 5850 because the fan on it died & the retailer i bought it from refunded me £90 (not bad considering i paid £104 for it & its 11 months old) so i'm waiting now for 7800 cards to see which card i should go for (this gen or last) but it will have to be an ati card.

My 5850 runs at 950/1200 (has for over a year now) so I'm inclined to believe that a 7850 is a pointless waste of cash for me, even though I game at 1440p. If prices drop on the 7870 I may consider it later on, but I think I did well picking up my card for £150 all that time ago.

Prices just aren't competitive with the previous 5000 and 6000 series products. In a way it kind of makes sense, few games over the last 2 years have really pushed hardware due to the longest console cycle we've seen yet. So barring things like Eyefinity, 1440p+ monitor resolutions, 120hz refresh rates and 3D gaming there isn't a lot of need for a large increase in grunt, and much more efficient SLI/crossfire scaling has meant that no one has had to wait for the next generation to gain a large boost in performance.

The other side of this of course is that multi-card scaling is still affected by many issues and it does require tinkering to get it running correctly. Single GPU setups are obviously more reliable and consistent in terms of performance. For that reason most gamers will wait to replace their single card with another, rather than take the risks associated with SLI/crossfire. It seems AMD doesn't see it this way.

It's simply not worth upgrading if you're looking to replace your 5000 or 6000 series card. The price : performance ratio has suffered a huge setback with this generation, and let's remember that 6900 prices have barely shifted since their introduction.

Last years performance at last years price. How very exciting for us all.
So very true.

It would had been a less bitter pill to swallow, if it only cost around £50 more on the launch price than the cards it replaces, so 7950 at £250 and 7970 at £350 comparing to 6950 at £200 and 6970 at £300...but instead, AMD decide to smack a wopping £150 premium for their new gen cards. If these cards were launched at Jan 2011, then the price would make sense...but we are now at 1st quarter of 2012 already...there's no way these prices can be justified for the performance they deliver.

Yawn. If they are too expensive or you dont think tbey are value for money then dont buy them, simple as. Moaning about it isnt going to change amd's minds. I feel ripped off every time i spend £3.10 on a pint of becks vier (99% water) at my local but moaning to the landlord wont change anything. Until we see the prices of the kepler cards, we wont know if these cards are value or not, perhaps the 28nm wafers are much more expensive than the 40nm ones, perhaps apple are to.blame?

A year and half on since the 6950 and the perfromance is the same but more at more cost

More fail its getting boring.

Would you like to make any more predictions as to when the prices might be more reasonable?

There are a lot of fruits you haven't used yet.

I'm thinking a pineapple next time ;)

I'm confused here.

Have we not been having the same thing happening with regards to the old gen being replaced for more money? You just... buy a GTX560Ti or GTX570 until the prices drop.

It doesn't necessarily make the card bad. In fact, given the performance of the HD7700 series, i'd say these are actually quite decent.

Fail? The largest retailer in the USA now has one brand of 7970 left in stock and every other version is now firmly sold out with no ETA.

And this has got anything to do with us because...? Who cares how the AMD cards are selling over the US, when we have to pay rip-off British premium price over here?
