If a person was to download a show from BBC1 onto his freeview box with a built in HDD to store recordings and then transfer the recorded show to his PC and share it with his friend. Both parties have a valid TV license. Is it legal?

Also the reason I'm asking is because - I'm curious as somebody from this forum suggested I watch something on iplayer, however it is no longer on iplayer, but is available via usenet. I'm wondering if I am allowed to "obtain" the file, if not, would doing what I said in my OP asks. I don't want to break copyright rules.

It's not legal but no one cares. The BBC aren't going to do anything and you pay your licence.

*shrug*

Do you mean record from live TV then share that recording? if so that is not legal same as recording the radio its borderline piracy.

Although that's never stopped anyone using VHS and cassettes, I wouldn't worry tbh

edit: sorry I didn't get that it was off the net, why would you download it on to the free-view box then transfer to pc?

Distributing? hardly...

unless OP forgot to mention that his "mate" is dave down the boot market, and will be selling these for £5 each.

Just copy it and let your mate watch it, then if it really bugs you ask them to destroy it, but i can't see the bbc actually caring about stuff like this.

Well i would say, does it matter, theres a lot worse going on the world than copying a few telly programmes:):)

Amen to that.

I'd download it in that scenario. What if you had recorded it at the time yourself and then watched it a year later? Would make no difference, you're just obtaining it through a different medium.

As far as i'm aware as well, copyright holders are more concerned about those who go out of there way to distribute than they are with those who download. It's about trying to tackle at the source.

The reason iPlayer get rid of things is because the production companies only license the BBC to distribute the program for a certain period of time, as you haven't been licensed at all to distribute it you can't give it to your mate. It is also rubbish though because nobody would arrest you for giving your mate a VHS copy of the same thing. Also if it is just to your mature nobody would ever fund out anyway and even if you personally told everyone about it they still wouldn't do anything as they would end up looking looking like the enemy I'm a court.

To be honest lots of things are illegal, when you went to school I'm sure some kid would bring in a video on the last day of term or just before Christmas, technically it's illegal but nobody cares.

If this said person is you, then please do not worry.

You are not going to get hauled over for it, you are not uploading this material to the masses.

It's a bit like the legality surrounding recording radio transmissions.

Don't worry!

People would constantly bring in Flubber in my school. Year after year. Weird.
