Beyerdynamic DT990 Premiums or Ultrasone HFI-780. I will drive whichever one with a headphone amp, but I do like a lot of bass.

I'm kind of leaning towards the HFI-780s, but what do you think?

the DT range kind of goes,

990 is open so lighter tighter bass.
880 is semi-open and is very neutral, and a great all rounder
770 is closed and great for bass (I own these)

However some people who have heard all of them could comment better than I, as for the Ultrasones, no clue :).

I've not heard the DT990 so I can't really comment on it. I do own the DJ1 (same as HFI-580) which I'm selling. I think they have more of a bass emphasis than the HFI-780 which is said to be very treble heavy.

Generally, opinion is that 580/DJ1 is more suited to electronic music while the 780 is better for rock/metal stuff.

Not Heard the dt990's (own the dt880 hifi) but from what I've been told the dt990 pros are one of the best open cans for bass. Slightly more bass than the premiums.

Have a gander at head-fi, you may get a few more idea's there.

There is so many conflicting reviews, apart from What HiFi, who hate both pairs, but I wouldn't read that toilet rag anyway. I do quite like heavy bass, but my tastes are somewhat eclectic. I wouldn't wear them out and about, and I would use them with an amp, so do you think that the DT990 Pro is the right one for me? I would be looking at perhaps the 250ohm version if I went for those.

My previous experience with better cans is that all the manufacturers have a different style of presentation. You're going to need to find a decent dealer and go have a listen. Do take your headphone amp with you.

I had a pair of the 990 PRO's (i think) but sold them as i found i didnt use them much.

I've now got the 780's and they certainly seem to have much more bass to them. They're also much easier to drive and don't actually sound too bad without my headphone amp, whereas my old Beyers definately needed an amp

Are they uncomfortable to wear for a long time?

I guess it depends on your definition of long time, i don't think i've ever really worn them for more than a couple hours but i wouldnt say they were uncomfortable. Less so that my old Beyers but i think thats probably a difference between closed and open as the closed tend to be a little tighter.

I bought mine about 15 months ago and i have read reports now that the newer models have slightly softer ear pads

I agree. Ultrasones are not uncomfortable in my experience, but there are more comfortable headphones out there. Particularly Beyerdynamic and Denon (the latter being the most comfortable).

Did you get them from the rainforest place?

I'm going for D5000.

Didn't like the DT770 I heard although they were the 'Darths'. Mega bass but just wooly.

A perfect complement to my Grado HF-1 and will work well with my Boutique Millett MAX. PLus the D500 are very easy to mod using the guide from markl on head-fi.

I've been going back and forth between the hfi 780 and the dt990 all night, and now someone has suggested AKG Q701s and ath-m50s...
