Would it be stupid to buy a SB CPU now?

I have the cash to build a new rig, and I'm mostly waiting for the first Kepler GPUs which should be coming out soon, my question is would it be a waste to buy a 2550k now, instead of waiting for a 3570k. I was totally prepared to wait until April for Ivy but I read it has been pushed back to June and I don't really want to put my build off that long.

Thanks for any advice.

I think buying a 2550k would be stupid regardless of the timing, if you're going to go SB I'd get a 2500k!

Isn't the 2550k just a 2500k without the iGPU and a higher default clock? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, so little point in spending any extra money on one in my opinion. The whole point of the K series is that they're overclockable, so having a higher stock clock means little.

Never stupid! If your planning to actually use your computer then stop wasting time, the 25K/26K/27K CPU's are great :D for overclocking, everyday computing and gaming.

The performance Ivy will bring over SB is hardly something that will revolutionize the was you use the computer!

Plus in computer hardware there's always something new and upcoming on the horizon so you could end up never buying.

This. Buy the best you can now and be happy. Obviously if there is a launch in the next couple of days... Just don't scrimp on the PSU or motherboard

Two of my mates have just bought 2500Ks. Ivy Bridge might be out in a few months, but Sandy Bridge is mature and well priced now, and not much slower than its replacement.

In this particular situation though the horizon is a little closer. Soon the Z77 boards will be out and then the IB CPU's. Even if the OP does not go for either he will at least have choice.
Maybe it will even bring a slight drop in price, or people selling their last generation kit and thus the MM being useful (not yet for the OP), in the SB CPU's and motherboards.
I am leaning towards a Z77 board and perhaps a 2500k but I will wait until around May or so to see what the prices will be if I decide against a 2500k, for me that isn't too long to wait - unless it is confirmed for any further delays.?

IB is not going to be much quicker, it is just a die shrunk SB. If you want a new CPU now then get a 2500K (Don't bother with the 2550K which is just a 2500K with a defective igpu) and be happy :)

I think that's what I'll do, go 2500k and GTX 680 (that's the one coming out first, right? At around 7950 - 7970 performance?).
