Sorry i do love a headline grabber :D

The new Xbox will not have a disc drive, suggests a report.

Microsoft's next console will instead use interchangeable solid-state card storage, which could be Microsoft's own proprietary format or something established such as SD cards, according to MCV.

The console is also reportedly confirmed to launch in 2013, but an announcement could still arrive later this year.

How expensive are these going to be?

Surely 50GB DL BD discs will be a lot cheaper. And what about those who would want to use an Xbox in a media centre and can't have the facility to watch BD films. They'd then opt for the Playstation.

Seeing as Sony would probably charge an extortionate amount for MS to use Blu-Ray on the next XBox, this seems like a good way to introduce a lesser prices edition but still having more than the 9.6GB DVD limit.

Even a SDHC card can carry 32GB.

Can't see this happening. No DVD playback, No Blu-Ray, no backwards compatibility, more expensive! The list goes on. The only advantage to some kind of propriety solid state media would be games are harder to pirate.

Even though downloading games is more viable we still need physical media and ATM optical is the only way.

If they did, they probably make an external drive like they did with the HD-DVD's.

Good idea, if they could pull it off correctly. The handheld consoles and mobile devices has been doing it for years. Reduced wear and tear, incresed loading times and large amount of storage, less open to piracy.

Large storage SD cards don't cost much these days, even if MS do make their own modified version. SSD's are coming down in prices too, by the time next gen consoles are on the market they be cheaper compared to now.

This, it wont happen, not in the current climate where gaming consoles are luxury.

MS would be mad to implement this.

Really prefered original Xbox to PS2, now prefer PS3 to 360 by a large amount more maybe bar the ease of playing/talking with friends.

This is looking incredibly dumb and likely to make me shift even further away from xbox.

Would be great to digital downloads on a console, tired of losing / breaking discs =/

-edit-
Not referring to the current DD's on LIVE; titles 3 years old no one cares about.
