New Graphics Card (£200 Mark)

Hey guys,

After a good while with my GTX280, I feel its time for a change as its struggling to play games at 1920 x 1080 (BF3 anyhow) without quite a bit of stuttery lag.

So as a Spec: (Flexible at any better advices digression)

Play the latest games @ 1920 x 1080 at High Graphics setting
Last me a while like my 280 has done
Cost no more than £220
No preference with ATI or NVIDIA. Owned both over the years.
Cost no more than £200

I'm running a fairly capable system. 2500k @ 4.4Ghz, with an Asus P8P67PRO supporting both Sli and CrossfireX (Both of which I don't mind if its better Price for Performance) and 8GBs of DDR3.

650w Coolermaster PSU. I didn't actually think about the 480 with all the new tech about, How do these stand up to the newer options available?

That PSU should be okay.

Best value for money ATM. They can be noisy, but good performance for the price. You can get a custom cooler if noise is an issue.
 
GX650w. Less than a year old :)

Looks like the general consensus is to grab the 480 then!

Having owned a 280 they can be equally as obnoxious IMO.

Mine used to get very loud indeed.
 
With not being completely desperate and having a scout around, would there be any point in waiting to see the new cards being released in the next few weeks?

Or is the 480 something I shouldn't miss :P

That's an excellent question. The new cards are definitely going to be at least +£50 at launch just because they're new. I don't know if other cards will drop in price as soon as the new ones release and the GTX 480 is definitely great for the price.
 
The next step up from a 480 is the 580. It costs £350. Then you have the 7950, it also costs around £350.

There is absolutely nothing in between. The 480 costs close to half of the next logical step up, yet doesn't perform in any way half.

The 480 shouldn't be a total bargain at £185, but it is. Which is quite funny when you think about it.

It's an old card. I almost bought one from here 13 months ago when they were about £194.
 
Its simple really,

GTX480 now, or wait for Nivida to bring something new and see also if ATI drop the prices or current Nvidia cards such as the GTX570 drops to £200 or less.
 
I picked up a second hand EVGA 570 GTX superclocked for £200. Had it for about 6 months now with no problems. It also has a 10 year warranty

Maybe look into a second hand cards with warranty

-If new, and you like heat and loudness, then go for the 480

You'll need to rely on the original purchaser for the extended warranty.

For our retail products that carry an extended warranty, and were purchased on or after June 22, 2005, EVGA will provide an extended warranty to the original purchaser of each retail product and that the product will not suffer, in material or workmanship, from any defect that adversely affects the performance of the product. This extended warranty is valid so long as the original purchaser owns the product.
