From N8 to N9

speaking from experience of using an N8, N9, all the iPhones, S2, Lumia 800, Desire S, Sensation etc I'd suggest (as many in the Lumia thread will know) a 4S.

Just by far and away the best available, IMO the Lumia 800 is fairly close, then probably the N9 then the S2.

Got to be a way to get the 4S doing everything you want, it just depends how much effect cost has if you're in a country where Nokia are selling the N9.

And yes, ICS has been "ported" but it's only a proof of concept so far, nowhere near usable. Not even sure the files are available for homebrew.

Why? If it does everything he is going to need for the next however long, then why does it matter that the OS is no longer current?

ICS has been ported to the N9, but really i stand by statement above.

It has been ported but at the moment it doesn't look like it will ever get a 'proper' release.

And you therefore are considering the N9  They are almost the same design!

The Pureview 808 and N9 aren't the same design? They look nothing alike.

i guess i should get rid of my touchpad since it's running a dead OS

If you haven't got a 3D tv with the latest firmware you'd better get rid of your TV too.

Your car probably needs upgrading as well, you might not have the latest tyre technology or ECU.

Any pets? unless their are going to be any more updates for them, or bug fixes, then forget it, they need to go too.

I could go on. The phone is an appliance. If it does everything the user needs in a way they are happy with, it makes no odds if its from 2001 or 2021.

Hilarious. :D

The user experience is vastly different. I'd describe the software experience on the N8 as slow, poor and ugly, where as the N9 and other devices are much, much faster.

Surely this isn't difficult for you and Sonny to grasp? :) Maybe it is, as you both seem to be stuck with your phones and want to try and pretend they are up to standard - they are not.

The N8 is a bad phone with a great camera, it can do a lot but it does it poorly. Simple as that really.

For the OP, he'd be okay with an N8 for the most part, but he does a lot of emailing... do you even use the email client on the N8? It's bloody awful.

No two ways about it for me, sorry. Even the E7 is quite a lot faster but it's still terrible. :(

I'm saying that the OP should go with whichever phone does what he needs.

There is no need to have the latest phone if your current one does everything you need.

If there is a new device that you want that does everything you want but is no longer supported, well that shouldn't be a problem either, since it does everything you want.

I don't know what nonsense you're talking about, but seems to have nothing to do with anything i'm saying.

I'm saying there is a clear difference between something doing what you need, and something doing what you want.

As I've explained, the user experience is vastly different between the N8 and even a very basic Android phone for example. They are much faster and would make general phone use and certainly emailing a lot more pleasant.

Obviously the above probably wouldn't be worth it as you'd lose the excellent camera.

My point with regards to the N9 is that the N9 is generally, a pretty expensive phone. The Samsung Galaxy S II as an example would be better in every way if he can get one for the same price. Maybe he can, maybe he can't. He stated he doesn't like the size so that probably rules it out anyway, but there are similar devices that are smaller.

We can also assume he would be looking to keep the N9 for at least 2 years. That is why support and application quality is an issue. What if he suddenly needs the superior functionality? Then he's stuck. If he's 100% certain that he doesn't, everything above can be disregarded and he should get an N9. It will provide a change from his N8 and it is most certainly worth it; it's a good phone. The camera isn't as good as the N8 but it's still very good.

He can at least look into it. That's all I've suggested. The smartest thing to do is go into a phone shop and compare the various devices to the N8 he has now, if he thinks the experience is a lot better then he can consider his options, if he doesn't, then yes, he should probably stay with the N8.

Robbo has quite a few points, future proof is an issue for me. N8 was futureproof and i would have kept it but it does gets slow AND push email for gmail doesnt work...you must set it to sync every 15 minutes (belle)...thats unacceptable for me.

Robbo should i just go for Atrix and nevermind the looks of it? its just another piece of plastic but the dual core and more importantly 1GB ram sounds like it could keep me happy for at least 1,5 years.

i am also fluent in flashing custom roms etc :D

The Atrix certainly isn't bad. Especially if you know what you are doing when it comes to custom ROMs, I'm sure there are plenty of good ones out for it, it's a well supported phone as far as I know and the screen is meant to be very good.

I'd give this detailed review a read: http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_atrix_4g-review-589.php

It will answer any of your questions and you can take my word for it that GSMArena are very objective and know what they are talking about.

My bad, I thought 808 was the greek name for the 800.

No, this is the Pureview:

I think it looks quite okay. Granted it's a bit of a funny shape as the camera part is massive, but it's worth it. :p

It's the ultimate device for people who want a camera, a phone and maybe a sat nav with nothing extra (well, limited quality functionality).

I'm tempted to get one anyway though. :D
