Hi Guys

Built a system for my sister for her graphics work, put it all together and it wont boot, is there anything obvious i should be trying before i start taking it to bits as the motherboard seems to have all sorts of lights on so i wondering if its something to do with the board settings ?

It booted up once, all fans spinning, sounded like it was going to boot, then restarted.. did the same again and now it wont do anything..

What also isn't helping is in her haste to pack all the boxes away the manual for the mobo has gone walkabout's

System is

Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - OEM
Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML8GX3M2A1600C9) * 2
XFX HD 6850 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 850W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CMPSU-850TXV2UK)
Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black
Samsung SH-B123L/BSBP 12x BluRay ROM / 16x DVD±RW Lightscribe SATA-II Optical Drive - Black (OEM)
Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT128M4SSD2)
Akasa SATA-III 100cm Rounded DAYGLO Blue Data Cable (Right-Angle Connectors) * 3
Zalman CNPS10X-Quiet CPU Cooler (754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/775/1155/1156/1366)

Plan of action at the moment

try taking some of the memory out - took 2 out and no different
re-seating the cpu - not done yet
checking back of mobo for shorting - unlikely but not done yet

ClearCMOS.

Remove the GFX card and use the onboard solution.

Disconnect the drives, you dont need them to get to the BIOS/POST

First things to check - power cables to motherboard are both plugged in?

Power to the graphics card plugged in? CPU fan connected?

You can try to clear CMOS as well

I used to build loads of computers like, its just with these modern boards i am not sure if i am supposed to be doing something else.

Yes i checked the mobo power connection, it was after that it booted as i only had a 3 pin one connected at first.

Will try taking the graphics card out and clearing cmos

Cheers for quick replies guys

Well i was so surprised that it didn't just boot up the first thing i did was start playing about with the front panel connectors.. i don't think its that, when i connected the right power to the mobo it booted using the button on the front of the case

I have the same board and CPU and had a similar problem. Reseating my graphics fixed it.

Are any of the LED's remaining lit on the board during startup? If there is a fault somewhere the LED for that component would signal the problem.

Well not having much luck here

Reseated the cpu - I am taking this to mean take it out, have a look see if anything seems wrong and put it back, the one thing that is foxing me is that i cant get the Heatsink to sit exactly right because of the bracket where as in my computer with the same Heatsink it seems to be fine but it doesn't appear to be affecting contact with the cpu.

Removed the battery and left it out for a bit, reset the jumper as shown in the manual

Took the graphics card out, disconnected all the hard drives, tried several different memory sticks and combinations.

Checked the power connections...

its now built up outside the case on a piece of cardboard..

No lights seem to be lit apart from the power light.. if i flick one of the switches near the memory sticks they light up but they are some kind of overdrive and voltage features..

It booted up once which is whats really confusing me

I know this may sound really stupid but have you made sure you connected the 12v rail
cable to the motherboard and not the GPU power cable ?

Well i tried it with another power supply, this power supply has a proper 8 pin plug (not made up of 2 4 pin plugs, connected that and it made the psu make a clicking noise and still no cpu fan spinning...

Tried the psu again in my computer and its fine

Tried it in another and it didn't click but one of the lights flashed and there was a faint electrical smell.... i think its short circuit somewhere

Well some people have suggested re-seating the backing plate for the cpu.. also of concern is the fact that the heat sinks around the cpu socket don't seem to sit flat and are making contact with the bracket for the fan..

Should i just stop here and RMA it ?

If it's no problem to try it go ahead. But yeah there'll be a point where you've tried everything you can and then you should RMA it.

Well in the most amazing turn of events i RMA'd the motherboard.. it got sent back.. and now it works... i am literally stunned by this occurrence but none the less it is now booting! however nothing is been outputted to the screen from either the onboard graphics or the standalone..

The red light next to the DDR is on solidly and when i hold it then it turns to flashing!
