New Xbox 'won't have disc drive, launching 2013

Sorry, I was just annoyed that the same things were being posted over without people bothering to read the thread first.

Flash prices just simply aren't cheap enough to use for games consoles, and people who mention scratching discs and dodgy optical drives, surely you'd be more wounded if your cartridge died?

Cartridges don't die.
I hate optical media. I've hated CDs/DVDs since they became the norm. Minidisc was where it was at. Smaller and protective shell so no scratches. I welcome catridges.
Also, those daying they are less hackable. Not really. Catridge based consoles have been hacked too.

Cartridges don't die.

I've had more problems with cartridges than I have optical media.

Remember the fun times you had putting a disk in the slot for it to not work? So you blew it as you figured dust was stopping the contacts? Nope, Not working. Blow it again... Nope not working. Blow it again...Nope not working. Blow it again... YAY!

Optical > Cartridges

Optical > Cartridges

Makes me nostalgic for the old days of Sega and Nintendo. :P

i cant honestly imagine that MS would be paying anything over $10/cartridge in the kind of bulk they would be manufacturing them in. Surely the increased security therefore less pircacy - more sales will offset increased production costs, perhaps they will offer a download only option at a reduced price.

I have not read the whole thread, but...

1) No optical media would be daft. Cartridges with enough capacity would add at least £10 to the price of a game.
2) No backwards compatability. I realise people say 'you have a 360 for that' but there is no excuse for missing this off just to save a few quid on the console development and manufacturing.
3) No DVD/Bluray films are able to be played

As always there are a lot of BS websites making claims on new consoles.
The only specs I will take notice of are the actual ones.

I agree.

Nintendo got a right bashing for sticking with cartridges during the N64 era.

To be honest even the Dreamcast\Gamecube suffered due to their inability to play DVDs.

If the Next Gen Xbox hits without the ability to play blu ray I could imagine a similar fate. Both Dreamcast and Gamecube were great consoles, with fantastic games. But the Movie media capable consoles were more successful.

if this happens, they will just release a seperate dvd/bluray drive, like apple did with the macbook air dvd drive. :)

i like the idea of games coming on cartridges/memory card.

No they won't, because console history has taught us that add-ons don't really work.

The MacBook Air isn't a fair comparison, it's an ultra portable laptop where the drive has been removed to make it lighter, use less battery power and the consumers buying them largely don't have a massive need for a drive.

A games console is a fixed device, usually plugged into people's TV or home entertainment system.

So make the consumer spend more money then?

Although it could suffer with the inability to play DVD/Blu rays, the way the industry is being pushed is towards download/streaming media content, after all apple seem to be doing ok with there sales of iPad etc selling millions of optical drive less devices reliant on there marketplace for media

Apps are much smaller than games...
