Tesco super unleaded - a cautionary tale

That's pretty significant, environmentally speaking - surprised it didn't make the national news.

How did the water get in but no fuel get out? Petrol station tanks are double skinned and generally more than up to the job, are there serious landslip issues at the site?

No idea - perhaps the double skinned thing is how water managed to get in but no fuel got out, or perhaps the crack was just in the neck - I do not know. That is just the explanation that was offered in the local press.

There is no chance :p

It's unlikely to state how old the tank was, but at a guess, I'd probably say late 80s, early 90s, assuming they are the originals from when the store was built.

It's since been decommissioned as they moved the petrol station when they rebuilt the store into an 'Extra'.

A lads civic I know from up this way never worked properly again after filling it with tesco 99. I have heard other stories as well. Always used vpower myself.

I once used Tesco Momentum 99 and it caused my engine to literally explode.

(posted for balance against those who claim supermarket fuel doesn't come from its own refinery with dishwater used as a mixing agent)

Reality is, I tried to use V Power in my S2000 and my Fabia VRS every time I can because usually Shell is cheaper. However, I've used both Sainsburys Super and Tesco 99 many times and never had an issue. Pretty sure on a few of my trackdays in the S2000 when the engine is being worked the hardest I had supermarket super in there and it made _NO_ difference.

Maybe a dodgy fuel batch.. but unless the whole of the local area is going OMG OMG OMG I'd put it down to a faulty car.

I use bog standard supermarket fuel (I have no preference as to which, either) in both of my cars and they just drink it up and ask for more. Your car has a problem :p

Use Momentum in my turboed to 2.2bar 220bhp Citroën DS3, no problems at all.

Either your fuel was contaminated fuel or it was an engine/sensor fault.

Well as everyones throwing in their petrol experiences...

I mostly use supermarket fuel unless im on the motorway, I go to Morrison's for my LPG and 95 octane for the LS400 (it needs topping up with petrol occasionally as thats what it uses until operating temp) and Sainsbury's for 97 octane for the Supra, I have of course used Tesco/Esso/BP/Texaco/Total super and Vpower in the Supra but I have never noticed any difference and I do roughly 18k miles a year. I do try to avoid Shell but thats only because Vpower costs a premium over other brands supers and a car designed for 97 octane won't gain anything from it.

I only ever use Tesco 99 as there isn't much choice around here for competitively priced fuel. A couple of independents with free card clone with each fill up or the BP garages which are a rip off.

Wouldn't be the first time there's been an issue with Tesco 99 iirc, so wouldn't rule it out. Didn't they have to pay out large dollops of compensation a couple of years back due to a batch being contaminated with water?

Silicon contamination, it caused lambda sensors to "glass" up, and wasn't just at Tesco as it was fuel from distributors to stations in the SE

Just joined the forum guys to give you a heads up on this - I live in st mellons and use this petrol station reguarly, as do a few of my friends with performance cars. We all filled up on the weekend in question and my friends Audi TT has a seized fuel pump due to a gel like substance in the fuel (of which audi claim they removed but obviously didnt as the new fuel pump lasted 4 miles lol) my evolution 8 also had problems along with a friends mk5 golf GTI (not as bad - already had lots of fuel on board and just topped up) he suffered with misfires for 5mins

Claiming against tesco as we speak!

Sounds like the silicone contamination of a few years back doing the rounds again. This is why I don't trust supermarket fuel, Shell or BP for me even if it is a few p/l more expensive.

Yup - I was one of the people affected. I assumed there was something wrong with my Pug so had it booked in to be looked at before the "**** hit the fan" and suddenly it was apparent there was a fuel batch issue.

To be fair to Tesco, the day after they announced there was a problem I phoned them up and then submitted all my forms.
Tesco sent me a cheque the following day which covered:

All repairs on my car
Loan car for 5 days (as my car was totally undriveable)
Full refund on the tank of fuel I'd put in the car

Annoying, yes. However quickly dealt with.

You've jumped to that conclusion by:

Blimey - If I knew it was that easy to convince somebody of something I'd go into the marketing business.
