Hi all.

Just upgraded to the following

Intel Core i5 2500K 3.3GHz Socket 1155 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor
G-Skill 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RipjawsX Memory Kit CL9 (9-9-9-24) 1.5V
Gigabyte GA-Z68AP-D3 Z68 Socket 1155 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Sort of maxed myself out on cost so not got a decent cooler yet.

My question is, can you overclock this kit with the stock cooler and if so by how much?

Any help appreciated. Cheers

Agree.
My personal best with the stock cooler was 4.2gig, but MilkyWay pushed temps to 74-75C, so I backed off pretty quickly.
Whopped my Freezer13 Pro on, and 4.5gig on the loud pedal- now tops out at 70C (MilkyWay again) with the case closed, or 66-67C with the side panel off...
The Freezer13 ain't the best cooler out there, but it looks great (IMHO) and it beats the stockie hands-down!

Around 4.2-4.3 as most will do this at stock volts, the extra Mhz does not add all that much tbh to the heat output so it'll cope, will be loud though. Get a better sink.

Don't need that kinda of OTT cooler for 2500K. Realistically you wouldn't go above around 1.35v on the core voltage if you want your chip to last, so temp is not really an issue and something like the Gelid would do nicely...

Agree with the point in general but I'd say 1.4V is the cut off point rather than 1.35V.

Higher volts do reduce the lifespan of the CPU but you're talking minimal amounts on a 10 year life cycle by which point you've upgraded anyway.

+1 on the Gelid or a Hyper 212 Evo, even the Akasa Venom Pico Compact will be better than the stock one :)

Gelid Tranquillo would be what I would get though :)

Do you think that cooler is some sort of arctic machine that will keep the chip at -20 all day? Its not exactly phase and it CAN still hit its thermal limits with a 2500k, just under 1.4v is fine anyhow.. have quite a few (tens) out in the wild with 1.39v and under for over a yr now with no degradation. Even if he didn't push the chip, i'd rather a nice modest overclock with great temps with the fans at low speed = very quiet and cool, instead of some less cooler running at higher rpms..
