ok, well here is the thing. I have a bush tv which has :
Sky HD
HTPC
Gaming PC

connected to it all via HDMI (for picture and audio), and then some pc 2.1 speakers (3.5mm jack) connected via the tv headphone socket (3.5mm jack) as there is no audio out.

the problem is, the audio is terrible as its going via headphone socket. so is there an amp that will boost this? or will I need RCA adaptor from tv to amp, and new 2.1 or 5.1 speakers that connect via RCA?

There is little point in using an amplifier, if you only have headphone out on the TV. Headphone out on TV's offer no real quality at all. So an amplifier, would just be amplifying rubbish really.

If connecting an amp to a TV, you want to use RCA/phono out. If your TV doesn't have RCA/phono out, not a lot you can do really without buying kit that will use digital connection. Whether it be SPDIF optical from the TV, if it has that, or HDMI.

ok, I feel stupid now, I just went to look at the back to get the model number, and buried in the inputs is the audio out rca jacks lol

that should give me better quality that the headphone straight into speakers?

u could connect the amp with sky HD/HTPC/TV either via HDMI, optical, etc... depending on your equipement. if your speakers connect via headphone socket only i suspect they aren't very good. you may want to look at some speakers as well

what is your budget?

you can get a good deal on bookshelves speakers and an amp 2nd hand. take a look at AVforums classified

so what would be suitable for an rca input but take a 2.1 speaker system that uses a single 3.5mm jack and ideally has a wireless remote

around £60

why don't you buy an AV receiver with hdmi in? AV amp would then deal with the sound and your TV the picture. What's your budget?

God that took me a while to type :o

that is not a lot. for a second hand amp and speaker you are looking at closer to a couple of hundred pounds realistically :(

not sure whcih connections you have available, but maybe you could consider some active speakers (they have buil in amps) something similar to these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-007-MA&groupid=702&catid=22&subcat=1848 15w isnt huge amount, but watts dont tell the whole story. i haven't listened to those, and no idea what speakers you are currently using, but it may be worth considering as an alternative

as my audio out has no volume control I would need something with a wireless remote, im guessing my budget is too low to sort it out :(

i am pretty sure that you should be able to connect the speakers directly to the SKY HD box via RCA/phono out and use the sky remote to adjust volume. however i guess that won't be good for HTPC.

if you can connect the speakers to the TV directly, i am guessing the TV remote could adjust the volume? again i am not sure about your equipment, but i could do that on my set up ;)

anyway poster above found some active speakers which include a remote so that could do the trick

a certain catalogue only shop had the Acoustic Solutions CAMP-1 HiFi Stereo Amplifier 500W for £40 (everywhere is out of stock). would this be the sort of thing im after?

would a home cinema dvd system (LG DH900 300W 5.1 DVD Home Cinema System) do the same thing? I mean, will they normally have an audio in so it will work with anything that goes through the tv?
