*** The Official HTC EVO 3D Thread! ***

Just picked up one of these on Friday for £207 from ASDA, lots of horsepower for not a lot of cash. I'm pleasantly surprised to be honest, I thought the 3D would be a bit of a gimmick but it actually works - Sense UI is a pile of crap though, HTC really need to ditch it, it looks so dated and is very bloated. I installed Go Launcher EX (along with Go SMS Pro, Go Contacts and Go Locker) and it looks far better.

So then, does anyone have a recommendation for a screen protector? I've got a PDair slip-case coming on Tuesday which will do most of the protection but I'm keen to keep the screen in tip-top condition.

Cheers,

Craig

I have the same case coming ASAP too :)

I use Martin fields protectors, they are expensive, but I find them excellent (you also get a camera lens protector)

I want to root my phone to gain access some files.

I've rooted my Hero and Motorola Xoom myself but i'm guessing by the threads on XDA developer threads are pritty similar.

I've got a few questions if people can answer.

The videos on youtube mention that their HBOOT is 1.50 but mine if 1.49.XXXXX can I still root my phone? I got my phone from the ASDA deal its not branded but I understand S-off is to allow any network carrier to be used?

I dont want to install any custom rom right now or gain access to the kernals just yet but need to root. Any easy method to do this with HBOOT at 1.49?

yes, apparently you can. I think they said you have to downgrade the Hboot to something like 1.49.0007 or something first though. Apparently Hboot 1.5 is a nightmare so be glad you don't have that lol.

I think S-Off is to protect the kernel, and you can still flash rom's, but not kernels unless you manage to get it into S-Off (I could be wrong!).

As I haven't actually rooted yet I can't tell you how to do it, but some of the chaps in the thread have.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248231 How to root stock ROM.

I'm registering at HTC dev and installing drivers. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for letting my know that apparently HBOOT 1.50 is much harder to unlock. Will post back how I got on.

All done! used the HTC Dev bootloader process, got Clockwork recovery installed but it did wipe all of my settings.

Got superuser access now so I can get access to my root files and cheat in Airport CITY!

So...have you actually voided your warranty?

Any idea if this will stop you getting OTA updates (i.e. ICS!)
Are you still S-ON ?

If rooted you will not get stock OTA updates. You'll have to flash a custom ROM.

And if you unlock the bootloader technically you now have no warranty

When I did the HTCDev unlock, it did ask me more than once and warn me that my warranty will be void.

My S-on is still on my phone but can I still install any custom rom?

As for ICS, I don't think there will be any huge rush for this to be rolled out, if your desperate to get ICS then root, S-Off, Bootloader and custom rom.

I installed Leedroid with S-ON just took a few more steps.

Just for reference, I've been using the 3600mah extended battery (one with '3D' on the back cover) since about midnight on .. hmm.. well it's been just under a day and a half and I'm currently on 50% battery. (Yes I know they are never their claimed capacity :-) )

Friend Stream = ARGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! + a few more !!!!'s. ;-)

Enabled it this morning as I thought it might be neat, and then it continually tried to access the GPS, constant data usage for updates (even though set to every two hours), and seemingly draining the battery more quickly. Had to go hunting for all the settings to turn the damn syncing off etc. I like that it got my friends photo's for my contacts... but I could do that in Winmo 6.5 without it trying to sync everything else as well.

GOD! - I just tried the '3D' and now I feel dizzy - lol

This phone has a 'health & safety' issue - lol

lol, when you first look at it your brain is in "WTF!?!" mode... and then after about 10 to 20 seconds... it seems to work and you can see the effect pretty well.

I tried taking a few 3D pictures and video... and they looked out of focus and seperated.

I miss a standard Nokia feature.

a quick press of the power button that allows you to change your sound profile.

For example - When I get to work - I want to quickly switch it into 'silent' or 'discrete' mode.

What's the easiest way of doing this?

Using the mikrunny rom here and the exact same function is available. A long press of the power button gives you an extended menu with Vibrate and Silent options. These can also be accessed from the swipe down menu>>quick settings.

Does anybody elses earpiece sound tinny and distorts, kind of like a blown speaker?

Might send my back if it's buggered.
