So I bought an item on Saturday night and sent a message asking for an address to collect from and offering to collect that night. When no reply was forthcoming, I wasn't unduly worried, but rolling on through Sunday I sent another message with my mobile number asking for him to text me his address.

7Pm Sunday evening, I decide to do an Ebay contact seller request, where they gave me his name and registered telephone number. Still no contact.

Fast forward to this evening where I ring the number and its answered by some foreign woman who has no idea who I am talking about. :( I started to get a bit suspect at this point, so put the phone number into Google and it came back with an awning business :(

Looking into the sellers profile, he has bought and sold plenty over the past few months and not had a single bad strike, so I am left  as to whats going on.

How do I go about finding out who this person is?

Forget it and move on if you've not parted with any money. If you have made payment you've no choice other than the normal channels.

Let me get this right, so you bought something on Saturday night and on Monday your opening a thread on OCUK... The seller may be busy or whatever, 2 days is hardly something to get worried about especially since his FB is good. Just because the lady who answered the phone is "foreign" doesnt = scam.

Plus paying by Paypal and then collecting is a big NO NO, well for the seller anyway. If it was me i would be refunding your paypal payment and asking for cash.

The phone number listed isn't anything to do with the ebay sale? That's rather suspect, no?

Did he say postage would be in X working days? I wouldn't ever expect postage so soon when purchasing at a weekend, it's not like buying from a shop if you buy from a private seller, a few days is nothing to panic about. Plus, I can easily see how someone else answering the phone, especially is their English was poor, would have no idea who ebayseller52352 is.

Is the item actually in the UK? Loads of drop shippers and foreign sellers claim to be in UK towns. You emailing to collect and they may just ignore you and ship anyways.

True, I bought something on the bay a couple of weeks ago, paid by paypal then picked it up a couple of hours later. Never gave it a thought. It was only the next day I thought how easy that would have been for the seller to get scammed. No receipt or anything.
Luckily I'm not like that.

You are collecting, but paid by paypal?

....................lol?

Sorry thats just retarted! Why would you not pay cash on collection if you are planning on collecting anyway?

When trying to appear 'smart', spell properly.. or it comes across as a little 'retarded'. Paying with paypal entails you to some protection in case the item was faulty or misrepresented, you may not notice this on first inspection, when a seller has your cash, theres not much comeback.

However as a seller, if the buyer pays with paypal then collects, you have no proof the item was ever sent. At least when you post you can at the very least get a proof of posting right up to tracked delivery.

I have in the past sold something, buyer paid with Paypal, picked it up from me then a week later put in a dispute saying the item never arrived. As they had collected from my house, I had no proof the item had been received by the buyer.

I could have had a video/photos and a signed statement that the buyer had received the item when they collected, however neither ebay/paypal would accept this as proof, they are very black and white. If the seller cannot provide tracking information, in their eyes, it was never sent.

It is very simple, if you are collecting, pay with cash...if you are a seller, only take a cash payment for a collected item otherwise you have no protection.

Well it turns out that the seller is someone from here....

I now have a mobile phone number, email address, home address, facebook....

Thanks guys
