USB Storage on Galaxy Ace

So I got a Samsung Galaxy Ace for my birthday, not that I needed a new phone (well, I dislike smartphones tbh >.>). Anyway, I took some photos and would like to transfer them on to my computer, this is where my problem begins; I can't seem to connect/ my computer doesn't seem to recognise my mobile device.

After surfing the web countless times, here's what I have done and failed:

1) Downloaded Kies; pretty much pointless since the installatioon would freeze literally freeze and the last point. I've tried installing it as adminstartor, tried messing round with the compatibility mode upon start; NOTHING!

2) Disabled debugger mode; didn't do anything

3) Dragged from the top on homepage; apparently, this is meant to show my computer, and that a green man would show and all I have to do is click mass storage, which would turn the green android into orange. I tried it but nothing happened, so I disconnected (making sure I use the safety remove) and then try to reconnect, except this time nothing shows up when I pull the tab down.

4) Unmount and then remount SD card; pointless

Now everytime I hook up the USB to my phone, it just charges it. I tried searching for a new device in device manager, but that seems to stay stuck on "Scanning Plug and Play compliant hardware..." I really need help with this

EDIT:
After about an hour of thinking, I did what I wouldn't really think about doing; restart my computer. This pretty much solved the problem. I can now hook my usb, drag the tab from home and connect to my computer, which then recognises the device. On a side note, don't bother installing KIES, honestly it's a broken piece of BS >.>

Personally I find Kies an excellent piece of software as of the last 12 months or so. I use it on many computers to service 4 different Samsung Android devices and it works flawlessly, little bit memory hungry perhaps due to the snazzy UI. Not sure where your problems with it lay but I am thinking it's something to do with your computer setup rather than Kies being generally buggy. Any over zealous anti-virus/malware protection installed?

That said, happy birthday :)
