Hi all

So... I just sat on my D1001 and snapped them... yeah I'll wait for you to stop laughing...

Now that that is over, what would you recommend as a replacement set? Open or closed doesn't matter as they are purely for indoor use. Budget is £100. Looking to try something a bit different this time, the Denons were good and very balanced, but lacked just a little bit of punch.

Thanks!

What music genres do you generally listen to?

The AD700 is probably too different. I find it hard to recommend the AD700 for anything except gaming and maybe classical music. It has less bass than neutral!

I listen to Rock, Blues, and a little bit of R&B Mainly.

I have to say I'm not sure what to recommend at this price point for those genres. You could always get a Creative Aurvana Live for £50 which is identical to the D1001, but you are after something different.

What did you not like about the D1001 besides the bass lacking punch?

Its not that I didn't like them, I just wondered if there was anything better (I know this is a bit subjective) around in my budget really. Is the Creative Aurvana really the same?

The general consensus is that they are the same design.

So for ~60% of the cost of the now discontinued D1001 you can get the CAL! which is hard to beat for the price.

I think other headphones around £100 won't be "better" but just different flavours and for a sound that suits rock, blues and RnB I'm not sure what to recommend.

Thanks that's useful to know about the aurvanas. Out of interest, if budget was not a limiting factor (within reason) what would you recommend me?

Denon D2000 as already stated, are exceptional. Or if you have a habit of sitting on headphones :p then definitely the Sennheiser HD25-1 II

I dunno, D2000 might not have the midrange/vocals for his preferred genres, although it does have the bass. You either look for a good all-rounder that has a balanced presentation or something with a sound signature that suits certain genres.

I used to own Aurvana live. I liked them but ultimately sold them as I preferred my Goldring NS1000s.

Bear in mind all the hoo-har regarding more recent Goldrings having build quality issues. Mine are still going strong after several years but others haven't been so lucky.

The NS1000s have the option of turning active noise cancellation on or off. With it off the sound quality takes quite a hit unless you're using a decent (and more to the point - suitable) headphone amp. With it on, they use batteries and the noise cancellation results in a slight background hiss. Other than that, they have been the best sound quality for buck headphones I've used and I still regularly use them in alongside (and sometimes in preference to) to more expensive closed headphones I own (DT770 Pro, M Audio Q40) .

Cool I'll have a look at those as well then. Would be really nice if there was somewhere to go and try headphones out... but I don't think such a place exists in the UK :(

Yeah, compared to other countries we have very little in the way of headphone shops; most hi-fi shops have a very limited range of just Sennheiser and Grado.

If you're a massive basshead then sure but I wouldn't say it has no bass. Don't get me wrong, they're no grados but they're far from mid/high heavy.

I didn't say they have no bass. I said they had less bass than neutral which is true.

Even the measurements show it against 2 bass neutral headphones.

And yet another contender enters the ring lol. Seriously though they look a bit too good to be true...

They are great for the money comparable to ns1000 amped sound punchy detailed more bassy but not quite as detailed or smooth as the ns1000 the pads are poor quality but for low cost fantasic had mine about 6 months before the right side suddenly just stopped working also the right side snapped out of the top part of the headband you can still put it back in and tape it hasnt snapped in two just came out of the upper headphone housing.

After mine broke I decided to bust out my goldring dr150 I had bought a spare brand new pair years ago and i was hearing things the pannys didn't pick up so i would say they are a bit more muffled than the goldrings but only slightly but that price is amazing really.

Don't let that put you off though at £27 the panasonics are a must buy even if just to try them for a while even though mine broke I am considering getting in another set for the future at £27 which says a lot.
