at home, you?
absolutely *FULLY STAR SWEAR WORDS* myself, only been driving for about 8 months, coming towards a roundabout to see this little jack Russell belt out into the road, hit the brakes, smoke/large skid/ anus twitching like a rabbits nose ensued, missed the dog by about an inch, had to pull over at the side of the road for 5 mins to calm myself down, cant say i would continue driving if i hit anything be it animal or person, another vehicle i could probably cope with as long as everyone was ok, but yeh, bad start to the day

The amount of times I have been driving along and I see a cat on the side of the road in the distance and then as I get closer it has a balls of steel moment and runs across, fortunately haven't hit any animal, person or vehicle but had some pretty close moments.

i hit an old lady once.. she flew off like a rocket and i was stinking of her perfume all day :( oh that was on a BMX.. but still i hit her hard she said sorry and i just sweared and continued.. it was her fault for crossing the road when the redlight was on and looking in the wrong direction.. if you hit someone and its not your fault i can't see how you can blame your self.. yes i was sorry that i hurt her but then again i wasn't at fault and she admitted instantly

Meh, it's only a dog. If there was traffic around me I wouldn't perform an emergency stop as it would likely cause injury to myself/those travelling behind me. I've taken out a few pheasants in my time, emergency stopping on country roads for animals like that is extremely dangerous to yourself.
Plus, a Jack Russell isn't going to damage your car.

Sounds like it's time to practice emergency braking. From the smoke/large skid in your description it sounds like you locked up the tyres by braking too hard.

This will mean your braking distance was 30%+ longer than had you braked effectively, and you would have been unable to change direction to avoid the hazzard if that would have helped.

Like most things in life - practice is the best way to improve. Find a quiet safe piece of tarmac and practice emergency stops. If you lock up, release the pressure on the brake pedal slightly and reapply as the wheels start turning again. Repeat over if necessary. This is what ABS does for you, it's known a cadence braking.

It might one day save you from a nasty and expensive crash.

Are you the voice over for road safety ads?

my car has abs, its less than 12 months old, my tyres are not far off needing changing though tbh, theyre legal, but not by too much, iv already booked it in a few days ago for new ones

If it has ABS I'd be concerned about the large skid/smoke unless it was an exaggeration as that's a sure sign your ABS isn't working! Unless of course you threw the car sideways in your attempt to stop!

Cats don't have a reverse gear :P

*Im not joking here, even if a cat it only 0.1 nanometers off the kerb then 99/100 it will run across rather than turn round, its just the way their brains wired.

It's horrible, but I no longer swerve for animals. If it's safe then I'll brake, but I'll never swerve and risk an accident for the sake of an animal.

there is a cat in my street that is suicidal wait for you to start driving out and then sits in the middle of the road and stares you out for a minute before walking on. Doesn't even move honking the horn I swear its pure evil.

If I hit a dog it would probably take me a while to get over it as well.

I bagged a large pigeon with my grille and bumper recently and that wasn't pleasant. I would be upset if I hit a cat or a dog.

Surely that would depend on how fast you were going and how big the dog is? You'd have to be going pretty slow for it to take a while, a couple of seconds at most, even at low speed.

I can't imagine it would be any worse to get over than a speed bump, although obviously if you have a very lowered car then it might be a bit more difficult.
