I was born into a middle class family, an only child of two teachers.

I am in full employment, but I do wonder if the powers that be would rather I didn't have any children, that I just work and then die.

It's pretty much impossible to live on my salary, rent is 70% of my income which leaves me no ability to save for retirement, let alone enjoy holidays or the like.

Looking at the BBC today it seems others are in a worse situation

I wonder what the real unemployment rate is in the UK, as I know some young men who live with their parents but don't claim benefits, and they can't be included in the figures?

I am a pessimistic person too, but I just don't see and end to this.

they give you a house and free money if you have children and no job.

how is that discouraging poor people having kids?

You make a good point, but there are millions of people on the council housing waiting list, so I'm not really sure that's true.

I can't find any recent data, but that article mentions 4 million people on the waiting list. I know there are families of 5 or more people living in two bed flats in London. not to mention a lot of people sleeping rough, article below suggests 4000 homeless in London.

They (MPs) are trying to get people to work for free, that inturns makes all their mates at top companies even more richer.

Don't forget WE are all in this together

squeeze out a kid whilst on the street, you will soon find yourself in a house.

people need to stop the "i want a kid" and need to start with the "if i was a kid would i want to live in this life"

having a child is not the be all and end all of life.

The government made it too easy for young people to have kids then live off benefits. There's teenage mums having 3 kids, giving them to the parents on a weekend and going of partying. People who actually want to work and need housing can't get it and those who don't want to work have council houses.

That's a very good point.

Actually, when I say poor people, what I mean is myself as actually I'm hardly middle class anymore, not if 70% of my salary goes on rent.

To be honest a lot of people are struggling, 30k annual family income just about gets you by now unless you do absolutely nothing but save.

No it isn't. It may be impossible to fund the lifestyle which you desire on your salary but it isn't impossible to live. Move somewhere cheaper, and prioritise your money. You aren't entilted to a holiday, or to a super swanky house.

Nations will become one, certainly fewer in our life time.

Rubbish. Globalisation isn't happening in the slightest, if anything nation states are become more inward looking and stronger.

I do believe they grade how quick you need a house. Being a single parent and homeless doesn't put you on the emergency list. Thats disabled people.

I can't help but think that your rent must be quite expensive!!!

My rent is just over 25% of my income. I only earn a little over minimum wage as well so not a lot.

I think that is you will get accomodation, not a house. You cannot magic up a house when they are none available. Otherwise you would not have millions on waiting lists.

Live somewhere cheaper / house-share etc

It's easy to find somewhere to live for under £500/month if you need to...

I agree with most of the rest of your post though... even though I'm on a good salary (exceptional for my age)... I still feel poor :(

I'm currently outlaying about £1500/month including bills for a well-sized detached 3-bed... but that's not even 40% of my post-tax income.

I would never pay 70% of my salary on housing - that's just bonkers

No I don't think the government is trying to get rid of poor people, I think they're trying to create more of them as you and a lot of others are finding out unfortunately :(

What an odd thread, i expect the government like any are trying to lift people out of poverty.

OP is not anything like poor, what with his fancy dan roof over his head, computer and internet... first world problems.

It also usually takes two people to have a baby so there would be other income from the other person but as some one put it so well - having a child should be a choice you make when you are financially and worldly ready not a given right!
