If I buy something online from Malaysia. Will I get charged customs import duty fee.

I'm not buying it from there to avoid taxes. It's just not available in this country.

It's a sports bag.

Edit: It's Malayasia... not Thailand.

If it's worth more than something like £18 (or £36 for a non-business package) then yes. Check the Royal Mail site, it'll say there.

Yes, import duty, VAT and maybe a handling fee. It depends on value though and whether Customs suspect anything. Coming from Thailand I suspect Customs will be looking closely.

Andi.

As Art says, over a certain value it'll be subject to 20% VAT, import duty (if applicable to that product) and also you'll likely get a administration charge from the courier for dealing with Customs for you.

Well over the free limit then. Getting caught by customs seems to be a bit of a hit-and-miss guantlet, any time I've ordered something from abroad I've been charged for it but some people seem to get away with it. I doubt they'd pass on the chance to tax an £80 bag though!

Try this.

Your courier may impose an additional charge on top of this.

Note, if you have a dodgy supplier, they may accidentally classify your bag as a low price, gift item which will end up without import duty.

Don't ask them to put gift on it, that's illegal. Ask them if they know if it will incur charges at the border. If they say it won't, you'll know what it means.

I wasn't here.

According to that, because it's under £135. I wont pay any import duty. Just 20% VAT. Which is £16 according to the site. Although it's really £18. Strange. £80 bag costs me £96. Still worth it :)

I've ordered it now anyway. See how it goes.

I think you also get slapped with an £8 admin fee of some sort. You must really want that bag! :p

I do indeed. It's extremely rare and well I just want it. According to the duty calculator it's going to cost me just under 100 quid (including the bag). Will keep you posted when it arrives what I've had to pay and what the script is.

If anyone else wants to buy from oversees and wants to know the ins and outs.

If it's received thru RM mate tho yer gonna get stung for £8 RM "handling" fee
I just got hit too :(

No qualms paying the additional £4 odd VAT but £8 Handling fee takes the biscuit, was only a £25 mic :(

so they want £12 odd from me to pickup the parcel, I'm very much considering leaving it til it gets returned to sender if they won't get charged adn just speaking to the company to see if they'll refund me.

Anyone know what happens if the package goes uncollected?
Surely the return post would be free for the original sender?

What about eh RM "handling" charge, will that be wiped fo the sender be asked to pay before getting their items back?
