Hey,

Been posting here and there for comments on parts and build now I finally have the (near enough) final build and would like any comments -

  • CPU - 3930k
  • CPU Cooling - Corsair H100
  • Motherboard - Asus x79 Sabertooth
  • RAM - (may change) 32GB Corsair Dominator kit
  • OS Drive - ~128GB SSD, at this point unsure but possibly an OCZ Vertex
  • 2nd Drive - ~240GB SSD probably similar choice to above
  • Mass storage HDD - Not overly fussed on this - 2TB of storage
  • PSU - currently have another thread discussing this
  • GPU - I will be shifting my existing GPU while I wait to see what Kepler is like
  • Case - Antec P280
  • Probably a few decent and quiet 120mm fans to add to the case

Trying to think if I have missed anything?

Any feedback would be gratefully appreciated. The CPU choice is based on the work and won't be changing.

Why 2 SSD's why not 1 Bigger one?

I still have a thing for sitting certain things on their own drive and leaving my OS drive separate. It may not transpire but its the 'intended' build. It also lets me pop the other drive and drop into my existing comp as and when I need to.

Why do you need 6 Cores?

Very heavy virtual machine usage along with some other CPU intensive tasks. My work qc i7 machine gets hammered. That's also why the RAM is high. Modelling AD forests/exchange/ts farms etc eats up resources :(

Sorry jamesfreddie the 3930k is the way I am going with the build. The extra cores and RAM make a big difference for what I do - I appreciate for most people it is entirely unnecessary to go down the SB-E route.

Haha tell me about it danjama - it should also last me for some time. Been saving up for a while but will still be a big chunk of cash. If it wasn't for the work I do on it then a simple i5/7 setup would have done.

Nice system, why a 120 & 240GB SSD though? Surely you'd want to get, for example, two 120's and RAID them? Or just one big one?

I had considered a RAID0 but I'm too risk averse.

As for the size difference it came down to requirement - the OS drive will have less to store as opposed to for want of a better word the data drive - or perhaps I should call it the 'high access speed required' drive?

A single big drive is also tempting me but it would be handy to be able to pull the second drive into 'this' machine I'm on now at times.

One of the reasons for posting is to thrash out my thinking on here with you guys and get different points of view.

Appreciate everyone's comments as you never know what you might have missed or not considered :)

Maybe not the best place but while i have you all... Do OC deliver on Saturday?

Another supplier happens to be down the road from me and essentially equal pricing on certain parts but the rest is from OC and well.. temptation to order tomorrow :)

They use their own Courier so yes, They will deliver on Saturday as mine was, but I don't think their office is open on Saturdays so they won't dispatch on a Saturday.

Make sure you select a Saturday delivery option and not just a next day option that turns up Monday.

Ah thanks for that - if I do go ahead that would have really annoyed me! Would have been sat by the door waiting all weekend otherwise :)

Does anyone have any advice on good 120mm fans? I would like to add some to the P280 case.

Quiet is the main aspect along with throughput.

I realise I missed an optical drive, might just pilfer the existing one I have from this machine as I only really need it now and then though a cheap SATA drive would be nice. Do they do powered eSATA drives? Must go looking...
