Anybody else detest Holidays?

Yea, you really get to 'appreciate' the finer parts of <insert popular destination here> or somewhere by spending 2 weeks in a holiday apartment. Thats way better than road tripping around California.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I hate those 'resorts' where you're essentially fenced off from the real country you came to visit. But do you go somewhere to appreciate the place? Or do you go to appreciate the culture? Because one you could do in a few days, depending on where it is. The other could take years.

Don't bother spending the grand to go on holiday spend it on computer components and lock yourself in your mancave for the week. This is what I do lol

I go somewhere to appreciate the place - the scenery, the buildings, the climate and the view.

I don't like doing tourist stuff, it's boring. I don't understand why people go to the typical attractions and take pictures and all that just so they can say they went there and show their friends pictures. Seems like they are just doing because that's what you do, not because it's interesting.

I like just going to the supermarket or watching the local TV and generally relaxing and soaking in the different everyday atmosphere. I get a kick out of that stuff.

"Tourist mode" just ruins it. You get this really superficial/disconnected feel for the place. Maybe that's your problem.

Also I think for some people going on holiday is more of a status symbol than an actual interesting and mind expanding experience. They just want to look interesting on facebook or impress their co-workers or whatever.

Holiday's are brilliant, as long as I book and organise everything I can relax.
A holiday booked and organised by someone else can jog right on.

and OP you live in harwich.... cruise?

I did say for next years Hols, that is an option. In fact the more I think of it I probably will.

I just find the whole holiday thing a chore and in fact I would happily set a tent up in my garden for a week and pop back in for a shower. :D

I am not moaning, just a holiday is not realy for me I guess.

Edit:

I see quite a few have my opinion though, so I am glad it isn't just me.

I'm with the OP and have never looked forward to holidays but when I'm there I make the most of it.
I've even been on my dream holiday to Egypt 3 times visiting all the sites but I didn't look forward to that either.
I've got to go to Italy in August and it's a chore thinking about it but when there I will become Mr Holiday.
I'm the person who is miserable before I go but who will get 100% out of it because of the money I'm paying.
Another thing, I have never known the cost of a holiday and I don't want to know.

I think if anyone agree's with this they are not going to the right places and not staying for long enough. I went to Vietnam and Thailand all by myself a few years ago and it was a long long journey and i ended up with a lot of luggage to carry around as i travled from place to place and picked up more bits and bobs along the way,if i had only been there a short time it wouldnt have been worth the bother but because i was away for a couple of months and got to see places and things i cant get here in Scotland and properly enjoy and experience the differences in culture i enjoyed it(thats an understatement). The chicks were hot too :p

when i flew to america while the 2010 ash cloud was going off and british airlines were striking at the same time, i guess that was stressful but if all goes to plan i'd say its not stressful at all.

like its been said, pay your way and be on time and its great.. its only when things go wrong it gets stressful but thats life..

most of the time it goes smoothly and i'd much rather it go that way and have a good holiday than be stuck at work..

Holidays are a bit crappy, At home I have absolutely everything I want and I know where everything is, My bed is by far the most comfortable I have ever slept in and at the end of every holiday I'm always glad to be back home

I think people are bloody mental leaving that behind

Who says you cant venture around where you are based just because you happen to stay in one hotel. PermaBanned makes a very valid point, some people say you never really really get a feel of a place unless you spend some real time there so you only spending barely 3 days somewhere is only skimming over somewhere and not getting any real taste of any culture. More watching a movie of a place than living the experience.

To be fair, the places you have been to recently lack any real culture difference but have great scenery so in that respect I can see where you are coming from.

I have friends that feel exactly the same as you and its fair enough, like everything some people like it some people dont. For me there is so much to see and experience and I love seeing those iconic sights around the world and experiencing different cultures and food.

Any day off work is a day in paradise as far as I'm concerned, and I could fill several lifetimes with my hobbies and interests without ever needing to go away on holiday, let alone set foot in an airport. They always look like cattle markets to me, and a really masochistic way to bracket your time off.

I could understand it for a once in a lifetime trip to somewhere like the Andes, or New Zealand, but for a few days in one of those Costa-del-Blackpool types destinations? Madness.

My idea of a holiday is a few off-peak days in the Lakes or Scottish Isles, or a winter visit to the Cornish coast to watch the Atlantic try to wash us up to Norway. But I wouldn't want to visit anywhere when the tourist season is on and herds of holiday sheep are bleating their way across the landscape. I'd rather take a holiday in the cupboard under the stairs!

Having said all that, after watching last year's live broadcast of the cruise up the Norwegian coast I have started to find the idea of a week watching that amazing coastline slide past disturbingly seductive. I think it's a surefire sign that I'm getting very old indeed. :-)

Surely thats the point, you go and do something you enjoy. You go to the places that make you go wow !! Ive never ever been to any Costa del Wotsits, I cant think of anything worse, so I dont go there.
