Australian Grand Prix 2012, Albert Park Circuit - Race 1/20

I would like to ask Horner why Webber never has KERS!

Hehehe. Me too.

I've now seen qualifying on BBC and it would appear that at the time Alonso went off, he was lying in 3rd place.

I would suggest that his 3rd place qualifying isnt a true reflection of Ferrari's true pace and that Alonso could've got it into the top 10.

Still...Ferrari are not anywhere near the front and need to make a decision on this year (ie. attempt to race and score as many points as possible OR begin to develop next years car, but testing various aspects of their current car, in the races this year).

We shall also now get to see just how good Vettel actually is, as he mixes it up in traffic (ie. no time trialling).

I hope this continues for many races, i've been waiting for this to happen, see how much of a racer he is when the odds aren't all stacked in his favour :D

Very happy with that session.

The Ferrari looks; quite frankily, awful.

Red Bull looks a little oversteery, I think they've suffered from the lack of hot blown diffusers.

BBC coverage is good, better than I thought it would be.

Sky can Deffo stuff it.

Yeah it will be good to see if the Double World Champion can fight for a win....I think he might have quite a lot of growing up to do this season :D:D

Poor Ferrari, they spent most of 2011 developing the 2012 car only for it be a major flop - I do feel for them, but oh well. I see Alonso trying to get out of his contract early unless Pat Fry can work some of his magic :)

I have no doubt he will perform well, but it will be very interesting to see if he lives up to the mantle of 'best driver on the grid' that some people seem to have bestowed upon him after an unchallenging season in a dominant car.

This is going to be a great season. :)

Great to see LH, JB & McLaren back at the front. The car is looking good.
Also pleased for Grosjean. Good performance from Merc as expected.

Red Bull have some work to do and Ferrari well....

HRT should be kicked out.

I just hope that McLaren can keep up the pace, they need to ramp up the development to stay ahead. They're not actually that far ahead of Mercedes, and I thought Schumacher and Rosberg both have a couple of messy laps. Although from the sound of things, the f-duct seems to be in development with McLaren as well seeing as Whitmarsh will not protest!

Right so Webber places his RB8 in front of Vettel but doesn't have KERS? I call BS myself and RBR are trying to save face on it all.

McLaren do have a history of being able to develop their car well. Their weakness seems to be immediately after the Summer break. This is the point where RBR have made significant progress over the other teams, in the previous 2 years.

BUT, fingers crossed, by mid-season, Hamilton will have a huge enough lead over Vettel, so that even if RBR make a big jump forward, they will be too far behind to make a come back.

Also, we mustn't get too excited at the lack of Vettel's pace. Webber was 0.7s behind pole and usually Vettel is about 0.3s-0.4s/lap faster, which would bring him much closer to Hamilton. It is possible that Vettel is merely out of form and will resume normal service by the time we hit Europe. You also have to remember that qualifying pace and race pace are sometimes different (ie. a car can be slower in qualifying and then be competitive in the race).

In any case, I think that this is going to be an exciting season, especially for the Brits. There is no doubt that McLaren have produced a very fast car....possibly the fastest car.

He probably won't have to "try" he'd be daft if there weren't clauses in it, stating the team must score x% amount of point as the winning constructor or something similar.

McLaren have only developed well in the past as their car has been so far off the pace. Take 2009, it's easy to find a second when you're 2 seconds off the pace. As you get closer to the font the law of dimishing returns applies. I doubt they are any faster at developing something than any of the top teams.

When Ferrari fix their car and fight for podium, which they are likely to do at some point during the season, I hope everyone will be saying "wow, look how fast they can develop their car." - err, no! it's just because they were so far behind to begin with.

I knew Ferrari were going to have problems in qualifying. Nice to see McLaren in pole, and that French guy also in third. Can't wait for the race, anyone getting up early to watch it live?
