Received V5 for a van I don't own...

Two weeks ago I received a letter saying that the V5 application I submitted for "FP55 PFA" was processing and would be with me shortly. This isn't the registration of a vehicle I own (But I do own DFA). I called the DVLA and explained they must have made a mistake when processing the details for my new car and they said they'd sort it but to send a letter explaining the situation just to be sure, so I assumed that'd be the end of it.

Today I got the final V5 for the wrong vehicle which is a Vauxhall Vivaro van owned by BT, saying it's registered to my address and I'm the registered keeper! I've tried contacting the DVLA but I can't until Monday because they are closed.

So what do people think I should do? Obviously I will contact the DVLA at the first opportunity but I'm a bit worried this is going to drag on forever getting it sorted, has anyone had any experience of a similar situtation?

Thanks :)

It's their mistake not yours, so I wouldn't worry. BT will eventually ring up wondering where the documents have got to at any rate.

I don't see how BT will know though until they get the letter saying that they are no longer the registered keepers of the van and that's when I can see this turning into a real pain in the arse.

Obviously the DVLA has read the V5 application from me wrong (Seeing D as P), and so assumed I've become the new keeper of the van. The only reason I have the correct V5 for my car is because I changed the reg plate to a private one using the new owners slip at the local DVLA office so have a V5 for my car on the private reg.

I suspect they wont as BT have probably just got rid of it - it's a 55 plate after all. Nowhere on the V5 does it tell you the 'owner' - I suspect BT are the previous keepers.

That's what I meant yes. BT are showing as the previous keepers on the V5 I've received but they are actually the current owners, the van hasn't changed hands at all.

I'm a little confused, essentially you sent off for an updated V5 for your own car FP55 DFA and they've now returned to you the V5 for a van that BT own because they read your handwriting as FP55 PFA but in the meantime you've also somehow managed to put a private plate on the car and get a V5 for it based on that registration?

Out of interest how do you know who actually owns it, have you contacted BT?

I think BT still own it if i'm following correctly but he's just been sent the wrong V5 (FP55 PFA) by the DVLA when he sent off to register himself as the new keeper for his new car (FP55 DFA).

That's exactly it. I changed the registration of my car using the new owners slip as that is all the dvla requires to do it, that's because I'd only posted the v5 application a couple of days before.

Yea I know, I'm just confused as to how he knows that, thats all :)

Well it would be a rather large coincidence for BT to have sold the van at the same time as he registered his new car with an almost identical registration I think. Possible but I would say it's more likely that the DVLA have just cocked it up and the van isn't changing hands at all in reality.
