you don't want the 550ti, it's nigh on the same price as the 6850. (That link has benchmarks for BF3)

That 460 is better. Also the 460s can be OC'd very well. I have a EVGA 460 SC clocked at 900mhz vs the 695mhz in the stock benchmark, you are talking nigh on 6870 performance. Nvidia also adds cuda support which means some software can use the GPU to "turbo charge" the process and nvidia also does HBAO lighting which i think looks better than AMDs but it will drop the FPS.

It would be wise to be on the 1155 socket (sandybridge). You then have the choice of the G/i3/i5/i7 CPUs. Bulldozer is rubbish and the llano socket will be limited for future expansion.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus HD 6850 DirectCU V2 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £99.95
1 x Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard REV 1 £84.98
1 x Intel Pentium G840 2.80GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £52.79
Total : £237.72 (includes shipping : FREE).

Better "futureproof" mobo that would allow overclocking of a K series CPU if one was added later as an upgrade (you cant OC on the H series and it must be K CPU!). I used the 6850 to save some cash to direct into the mobo budget (i still favour the 460). If his OS is 32bit it's pointless adding more RAM, if he does indeed have a 64bit OS you could add another 4GB of RAM later, it's so cheap he could probably blag it as a present eventually.

Hope this helps, any more questions or problems you know where to find us. Feel free to change the search criteria in the link to find something that suits you to the budget you have :)

EDIT i used the free postage as once you reach 100 posts you qualify for it....so it's definately worth taking the time to discuss your options ;)
