Is insurance really that ridiculous for new drivers?

Just talking with the boss having had to run the joint this morning while he ferried his lad to college.
I queried when he was going to be able to drive!
Apparently he's already passed his test but cannot get insurance for under circa £3,000!
Of course I poo pood this and said you must be able to get some old banger insured cheaply, to be met with the reply that they tried a quote for our battered Mk1 mondeo 1.8 we have out the back. That came back at £9,000 WTFF
(boss can't get him on as a names driver as he only has a trade policy that doesn't cover anyone under 21)
What's a young lad supposed to do these days?
I'm guessing the answer is "catch the bus"
The mother won't allow him to have a scooter either as hes already tried killing himself on one of those.

Surely this isn't how it is today. If you take the fact a 17 year old won't be earning a massive wage, this is roughly all of the guys pay packet for 4 months!!

it really is that expensive . the only pheasable way I found insuring my first car at 19 was a classic policy. it was just lucky that what I wanted to drive could be insured on such a policy.

It's a laugh isn't it. Insurance companies charge what they want and are effectively a monopoly. My car is worth less to replace and I continue to gain experience as a driver, yet my premiums go up rather than down. It is a legal requirement to be insured before you drive. Why aren't the Insurers properly regulated to stop them taking advantage of this. Because the function of Government is overlooked time and time again in the belief that the Free Market is the answer to all our problems. Morons. Usually well off morons.

And they wonder why people dont bother....its far far cheaper to get fined and points than it is to pay 9K a year on insurance.

The missus who is 24 is insured for £550 quid now on a provisional licence and that goes up to £750 when she passes (should be about 2 months time). This is on a 55 plate 2.0L Petrol Focus.

Postcode is a massive contributor.

I'd also never even consider it below the age of 20.

Yes it is. IIRC when i was 17 it was going to cost a minimum of 3k to get insured on my mums car so i never bothered (2002? 1.6 stilo that was bought for about half that :p)

It's probably cheaper for a new driver to get a taxi everywhere rather than fork out thousands for insurance. It really is getting beyond ridiculous.

I'm faced with this same dilema, twice now :( Last year my daughter passed her test, I waited till she was 21 and now have her on her mums car, which costing me an additional £110 (or thereabouts) a month.

My son just passed his test this month, he's 18 and obviously he wants to also drive now but it bumps up the premium by another £3k.

I've also had a look at policies where they install some sort of tracking device in your car, I can get one with the Co-Op for around £1200 with me, the wife, my daughter and my son but I've read that they can and do demand payments during the run of the policy dependant on how they rate how the car is being driven.

Less common cars are cheaper I believe, pretty sure that's the case. If you don't go for a 106/clio etc the price will probably lower.

Such a shame it costs so much. Can't see how you can ever afford it at that price.

I paid just under £1k and that was being over 20,license for 3 years but no ncb.

Highlighted section explains why...

My insurance ended up being about £1.2k, something like that... 1.3l ka.... (19, licence for 1 year, but no NCB). In an area with basically no crime... Well very very low crime rate town.

It's greatly depressing.. you look at all these second hand cars, but really you need to start looking at insurance when you buy a car rather than the car itself....

I paid 1300 for my first year at 19 for a 1.3 mk2 golf through footman James. they couldn't renew this year as they weren't taking new policies on for under 25s due to something to do with under writers. Phone admiral to see what it would be like on a multi care policy as my dads renewal was due the same time, they honoured a years no claims even though out don't accrue any with a classic policy and I ended up paying £960 fully comp at 20 1ncb

edit: engine size has nothing to do with it King Damaged. I can now insure an s14 200sx or non turbo mr2 for less than a 1.4 Mk4 Golf at the moment

it is that expensive yes.. unless parents pay or you somehow can afford that much a year having a car is an expensive thing..

My first year insurance (3PF&T)was about £1,100 on a R reg 106 I believe it was when I was 18. Back in 07/08 and prices have only risen since then :(

Really? When I was looking I found quite a bit of difference between something like a 1.6 Focus and a 2.0..
