To buy a Cheap Corsa, or go for a lease?

The 1.6 isn't going to set your world on fire! And i'm sure you will still have plenty of fun in the Polo.

There is also a Seat Ibiza 1.2 TSI FR, very sporty and quite nippy for a little car.

If it was me, I would be getting the cheapest car I could get, that I could live with on a daily basis. I had considered this route when I worked for the NHS, so I could have a mental 2nd car, and have a cheap lease car to get me around. But it wasn't worth it as back then I was on pennies! Now I work for a GP surgery and not paid through the NHS so unable to get on the scheme.

Saying that I don't think I would, as the savings are not to be had for myself. Having built up NCB my insurance is relatively cheap, and I like to be able to tinker with my motors ;)

The cheapest i can get is a Nissan pixo for around £170. However if im going to go for a brand new car i reckon i may as well go for something relatively decent thats going to be a bit of fun, look nice and something i can be proud of :).

Well what are the options on the deal? Can you choose any car you want?

I beleive you could probably make requests but its mainly based upon carbon emmisions and how high they are and as such your given a list of about 20-30 cars ranging from Nissan Pixo's to Audi TT's.

Out of that list i chose to get quotes for 5 cars (the maximum you can have) so from memory i put down the Nissan pixo, Citroen DS3, Polo, Fiesta and Audi A1 and from the prices that came back i figured the DS3 was the best overall. Originally had my heart set on the Audi A1 as the price on the list was £246 as well as the DS3. However when i got the actual quotes back it turned out to be £263 whereas the DS3 came back as £230 so seemed like a better deal.

Definitely, by no means did I mean to get the cheapest possible that you couldn't bare to live with.

But a VW Polo is in a different league to a Pixo.

Out of curiosity what were your quotes for the Fiesta and Polo?

Cant quite remember but ill check when i get home from work at about 7 if you guys are still around then. Think the fiesta was around the same price as the DS3, the polo about £200.

The polo isn't a bad shout if it's cheaper than the ds3, I don't think you'll find it nicer inside (in base spec) personally but as already said if it's a 1.2tsi it'll be nice to drive.

Could you get a quote for a c1/aygo/107. Any would be a great first car and likely cost pennies on your type of deal.

Get the polo for £200, for me the Citreon is not worth £1000+ more over the 3 years than the VW.

In fact I would definitely have this deal when my OH passes her test and is working.

What is your band if you don't mind me asking aaron? As this dictates the amount you pay...

Just got off the phone and got my actual quotes back, so as follows:

DS3=£230

Alfa Romeo Mito= £236

Polo= £203

Nissan Pixo= £166.

Audi A1= £264

and band 7 Rossk. Just got off the phone and got my actual quotes back, so as follows:

DS3=£230

Alfa Romeo Mito= £236

Polo= £203

Nissan Pixo= £166.

and band 7 Rossk, Sorry didnt mention before...i personally dont work in the NHS, however my Mum does and will be putting it in my name with it coming out her salary and me paying her back. (double checked with the NHS and agency and this is all fine to do).

Yes that is perfectly acceptable is for all intents and purposes it's a family lease scheme. Most of the contribution comes out of your NHS Pension so you get stunned later on in life ;).

Get the Polo! But if you prefer the DS3 and you personally think it it worth £30pm more then definitely go for it.

If you're buying a new car, get a Polo, or if a used car, a Polo ;)

They are very reliable and keep their value very well. The new one is around £9,999 for the base model, but 3 door in white, pfffffft, love it!

The Polo is hideously expensive.
Get a 6-12 month old 1.25 Fiesta Zetec with parking sensors and fodling wingmirrors for £8600 ish off motorpoint.

That said, I would advise the OP to get a cheaper older car. At 19 a big loan is a bit daft and a lease never amounts to anything - All imo of course.

Which engine in the Mito?

1.4 :D

Thanks for you help rossk, True £30 is a lot more tbh but i much prefer the look of the DS3 to the Polo. Anyone know what the internals are like?

on the contrary, at 19 his outgoings are little and if he sees a career in his work, why not?

Thanks for all your help guy's. Still not much closer to a descision at the moment but in veering more towards the lease I think.

Edit: Misread it, didnt realise it was your Mum's lease car.

This is starting to sound like a rather daft idea. Infact I'm amazed the scheme allows it and think there is a chance that whoever you asked got the wrong idea.

This is now feeling like a bad idea, you are commiting your Mum to something through her work which in all honestly you'll get bored of pretty quickly - everyone does at 19.

Stick to buying your own cars IMHO. It'll be better in the longrun.

Aaron,

i currently have a lease car through the NHS and i can hopefully clear a few things up although it will no doubt be through a different fleet solutions/insurance company...

At the end of the lease you can get a certificate which is widely accepted by insurance companies as proof of NCB.

If you are to leave the NHS you cant just 'hand the car back' you have to pay an early termination fee which is dependant on how far through the lease you are.

As far as i was aware the only people that can be insured on a lease car under the age of 21 have to be employed by the NHS so i would get this in writing as i have just send another contract away for a car and it states quite clearly on it that this is the case.

Also the NHS pension has recently changed, it used to be based on the last year of your service but it is now averaged out over the term of your NHS service, this will obviously be dependant on when you/your mother joined the NHS.

HTH

I'm still surprised that they will offer insurance to you at age 19, I know you've said you spoken to them on the phone and all...

Sorry i shouldve clarified earlier, but nope its definately the case in that they will take me on as mentioned before it is more of a family scheme per se...in this trust anyway. Also i realise im committing my mum but it will be me paying for it and any cost she loses elsewhere i will pay her back for it so in essense she wont be losing out...well unless i end up without a job, in which case she has the disposable income to cover me for the period im out of work and then i will pay her back. Also she is the one pushing me to go for this and is wants me t do it. It is my step dad who wants me to get my own car.

Thankyou very much for the reply, much much apreciated :) back on topic we understand there is a termination fee, however for all intents and purposes my mother is staying with the same trust for many more years to come unless something bad should happen (shes been with them since she was 21) and we are both willing to accept should anything happen we will have to pay. One of her friends moved trust a few years back and had to pay.

With regards to the under 21 thing, with this particular trust they seem fine with it and quite a few of my mums friends and colleagues do this for there kids and as mentioned weve confirmed twice with them stating clearly what age i am and that i will be the main driver and they had no problem with this.

and in terms of the pension my mums went to the relevent departments in her trust and they have said that there should be no issues with her pension as shes got another 15-25 years left before she can retire and because of when she joined it shouldnt affect her pension anyway so so far sounds good :)

OP, how much is the early termination fee?

Depends how far into the lease you arem just like any contract really.

I'm still surprised that they will offer insurance to you at age 19, I know you've said you spoken to them on the phone and all...

Just as surprised as me really as i honestly didnt think they would do it for me, however if the offers there were thinking why not take it. :D
